I would take her off the singuliar immediately.Read the posts. This is a dangerous medicine.Merck does not want to fess up,they stand to lose billions.
The thing is....I am a respiratory therapist and have a ton of patients that are on it...only children are my patients. I have not heard anything negative about it until this website. Another example is I have my patients that have an asthma flare up and go on short term steroids. Parents that are new to this get afraid because of all the terrible things they hear, when in reality steroids are the only drug that takes down the inflammation in the airway and are the most effective in treating bad asthma episodes. I explain to parents that steroids have those extreme side effects only when give for a LONG period of time.....
I do believe, however, that parents know their children better than doctors and I am always telling the doctors that I work with to listen to the parents....they know their children best, so, I do respect and listen to all of you. I just don't want to make the wrong decision. I know that kids can be free of asthma symptoms for years and that one time the flare up is bad. This is where the preventive meds like singulair comes into play. Pulmicort....the other drug we use for children is not as effective for my daughter. I guess I need to read more on it and maybe more posts.
If you are a respiratory therapist, why didn't you say that in your original post? You say you haven't heard anything negative about Singulair until reading these posts, but are your patients' parents asked about their children's sleeping habits, mood, gradual behavioral changes? The connection between a drug and its "side effects" can be difficult to make, especially when the clinical expectation is that there will NOT be one. I mentioned to our allergist and pediatrician that our child had mood and sleep "issues" and neither said 'oh, it may be the Singulair' b/c they weren't expecting Singulair to have that effect. I now believe that it builds up in the brain and it poisons children. Period.
First off you are a mother,if your gut is telling you something isnt right, well it prob isnt.2nd you are in the medical field, this drug is under investigation for psych side effects,we should all be upset, that a drug that can cause psych side effects is passed out to small children and babies. The side effects of this drug are sneaky, misdiagnosed, and passed off as other issues.A study done in virginia, says 60% of asthmatic children have behaviour issues, but does not look at their medications.Having been a mother that has lived this ,you are in a postion to help with change, children are suffering and continue to suffer, because of this drug
