I was prescribed Toprol for an irregular heart rhythm (eventually diagnosed as premature ventricular contractions) that developed suddenly when I was 54, despite an active lifestyle, low-normal weight (110), low stress levels, and low blood pressure (100/60). I felt as though my heart was skipping beats, and the "catch-up" beat was so strong my entire chest seemed to vibrate. The Toprol stopped 98 percent of the PACs virtually immediately. But within days I noticed occasional numbness in my legs, and my hands and feet turn icy cold for no obvious reason. I'm also quite tired till late afternoon (I take the Toprol around 10 p.m.), and I just feel "blah." No suicidal, but generally unmotivated. I am often sleepy--at least until around 1 or 2 p.m, when the Toprol starts to wear off. I'm not ready to stop taking it yet--though these reports are sobering--because the PACs made a normal life impossible. But I'm going to be cautious, and if other side effects appear, look for other options.

I was on Toprol (can't remember dose) for high BP and MVP related irregular hear rhythm. Once on it I was always tired, lethargic actually, unmotivated and just "down". I felt "heavy". My heart would skip a few beats and then beat wildly and forcefully. When my NEW doctor checked my heart rate it was about 41 (should be 62 - 68 for my normal) and my BP was about 150/100, not good. We switched to Lisinopril 20 and feel great with a heart rate of 68 and a BP of 130/70. I have read some negative side effects from Lisinopril on this website, but I have had no ill effects at all. Since I had such a bad time with the Toprol and am doing well with the Lisinopril, I suspect there is something better for you out there. There are many BP drugs out there and you will probably have to try them and see what works for you. I always ask my DR. for samples (enough for 2 - 4 weeks) since I have had some VERY bad reactions to some supposedly "well tolerated" drugs. Listen to your body and be educated about side effects when you start a new protocol. Best wishes for finding the right solution for you. Val
