Have you been for an ultrasound? Sometimes after its placed inside it can shift to an area that its not suppose to be. They are suppose to check the location 3 weeks after the day its inserted. Contact your doctor and schedule one if you haven't had one yet. By the sounds of it, its not sitting where it should be. As for the periods, I had mine for roughly a month, I've now been on Mirena for about 6 months and I haven't had a period for about 4 and a half months, Good luck with it and hopefully your body gets adjusted to it. Worse case, follow your gut instinct. Take it out if you believe its damaging. You know your body best.
You sound like me. I posted previously about it. I did not last the entire 6 months in part because the bleeding made me so terribly anemic and secondly it was destroying my marriage. I bled as you are for 4 months before I had it removed, I had mine inserted July 23, 2008 and had it removed a month ago. It took about 2 weeks after removal to stop the bleeding completely but now my head and body and everything is getting back to normal and I feel so much better. I have my sexual desire back and I'm not screaming at the kids like I was and my anemia is slowly getting better since I'm not bleeding constantly.
I hope you get better after the 6 month wait. The bleeding may stop but the rest will still be there. Take care!
DON'T GET IT REMOVED!!!!!!! I had exreme cramps just like you and they felt like I was in labor. I thought that I was miscarring so I went to the docter. After they did an ultrasound, they said the I had gotten an infection that was making me bleed heavier. I was accually bleeding on top of the IUD. This was the reason why I bled for a month straight. They told me that it would need to be removed immediately. The pain I indured to have it removed was worse than giving birth. But that was way back last September. Since then I have been a whole lot better. No cramps, and my periods are dissappearing....slowly!! Good luck!

I'm feeling better and I think the bleeding is lightening up a little bit. I'm hoping that it'll finally do as it's supposed to. If the cramping kicks back in and the bleeding doesn't come to an and I'm definitely scheduling an appointment with the doctor for an ultrasound. Sometimes I hurt and just have this hunch something is wrong but I'm so nervous to get to the doctor and plain just don't have time. I appreciate all of the advice and information. It's helped me a lot. Thank you!
