Depression! Wow. I'm the world's most upbeat person but I've been slipping down the emotional slope for the past three months; wondered if it was the Niaspan I started taking at the same time. The Niaspan web site doesn't list it as a side effect, though, so I thank you all for putting your comments on this web site. I've been ready to do anything (even drastic action) to deaden the emotional pain. I'm a scientist and will now eliminate the medication to see if I begin to feel better. I'd rather feel good than lower my bad cholesterol. What would be the point?

Depression is a symptom of low cholesterol. You have to do some digging to come up with this cause the drug companies don't print everything.

Since you are a scientist, you might be interested in some cholesterol data that will change your outlook on LDL ( "bad cholesterol")

Below are links to two maps of the USA. One map plots death rates from heart disease and is produced by the Centers for Disease control (CDC). The second map is from Quest Diagnostics and plots LDL levels state by state by state.

As you look at the color maps, you will see how heart disease plagues the south southeastern USA, with low rates in the North Northwestern USA.
You also cant help but note that the higher LDL cholesterol is in the North northwest USA where heart disease is at the lowest.

CDC Map: Death rates heart disease USA

Quest diagnostics Map: Mean LDL levels State by State.

This data changed my entire perspective.
