I would like to know who is NOT experiencing side effects from Singulair. We are not. My 7 years old started Singulair three months ago because of allergy issues. She had asthma attack every other week, running nose all the time, she was so miserable, she missed many days of school and she couldn't exercise .Since she started to take SIngulair her allergy improved, no more asthma, no more running nose. SIngulair did not change her way to be. She is doing very good in school (she is above the average..) she does piano, ice skating, she is purple belt Tae Know Doe, speak two languages, she is doing great in everything. Of course she has her "bad moments" but which child does not? I tried homeopathy, but it did not work, she got worst and worst. I was supposed to give SIngulair to my daughter a year ago, I did not because I was afraid of the side effects. But I wished I had started before because I could have avoid so much steroids since she had asthma most of the time. The doctor convinced me to use this medicine when she said " You think SIngulair has side effects, yes sometime it does, but do you know the danger of using steroids so frequently in a little body?" Then I thought I had to give a try. I am glad I did. Of course I keep watching my daughter behavior closely and reading all the possible side effects of this medication. I forgot to say that beside singulair my daughter is also taking Pulmicort, two puffs once a day.

All you can ask for is to be educated against the side effects,as long as you are aware and looking out for your child, thats the best.I think we can all agree that this meds worked for our childrens asthma,it was efficiant, but nobody warned us off the danders up until a year ago,so the suffering our children suffered before that was not recognised as an adverse reaction. You should be aware that the side effects are sneaky slowly creeoing up in time. The first thing i encountered with my son was not being able to fall asleep,it got much worse from there, but over a period of 3 years.Just keep on top of it ,good luck to you both i really wish you the best, asthma is a nasty condition we hate to see our kids suffer with, but mental illness is way worse

Piercemom, she takes 5 miligrams, once a day.

Do you think is too much?

My daughter has been on Singulair for many years. In fact I need to figure out exactly when she started on it. I think it was around the time it first became available. She is 12 now. No issues or side effects with it as far we're concerned. She is a delightful child. She does have "inattentive-type" ADHD, but first showed signs of that at age 3 and diagnosed at age 5. I'm pretty certain that was before she started on Singulair. She is also on several other allergy/asthma medications (claritin, veramist nasal spray, asmanex inhaler, inhaled albuterol when needed). She is not on any ADHD medication, but is doing very well. She takes omega-3 (fish oil) supplements, which her pulmonologist recommended and is also recommended for ADHD.
She was diagnosed with asthma when she was hospitalized several times for pneumonia and respiratory distress at age 1 1/2.
Asthma is a serious, potentially life-threatening illness. It is very scary to read about side effects for Singulair that some have written about, but it is important to remember than a huge number of people take this drug and do not experience these side effects.
I guess I think that it is important to be aware and watch closely, but don't get caught up in hysteria.
I remember when my daughter was first diagnosed with asthma, my husband and I were very concerned about the medications she was taking and any potential dangers, and the doctor reminded us that not being able to breathe is a serious danger!

I don't think that chosing not to give your child singulair because of the risk of psychiatric and physical side effects is getting caught up in hysteria. I call it INFORMED CHOICE - something that many parents have been denied! My son suffered for five years from psychiatric side effects that his doctors never told me could be due to Singulair. His symptoms developed over time and snuck up on us and made the connection difficult to make. It was only after he becamse depressed and started wishing he was dead because he couldn't stand the way he felt did we make the connection - at the time, the only psyhiatric side effect listed in the information from the pharmacy was "depression". Now he is Singulair free and is no longer plagued by anxiety, depression and other psychiatric issues! Yes, asthma is a very serious, chronic, inflammatory condition of the lungs and does need to be treated, but Singulair has NOT been scientifically proven the safest or most effective treatment option! Nobody knows why its horrendous physical and psychiatric side effects affect certain children and not others or why they happen at all!
