I had the Mirena for a mere 5 months and had terrible side effects although I did not have to endure surgery, as you did. What an ordeal you have been through. I was a few years older than you, having had the Mirena at 43. Had it removed and within 3 months started and FINISHED menopause...what a shock. I had trouble with even low dose birth control pills, which I tried prior to the Mirena. In actuality, the low dose refers to the estrogen, not the progestin component. For me, the amount of progestin in the Mirena is what wreaked havoc on my body....it certainly did NOT stay local, as the manufacturer claims! I am now on HRT, a bio-identical estrogen patch and bio-identical progesterone. I am tolerating both well, having been on them for 8 months now (have to have the estrogen to protect my heart and bones until I am of a more normal menopause age and the progesterone is needed to protect against endometrial cancer). The reason I wanted to reply to your post is that I wanted to pass along my experience, seeing as you are 38 and have had a TAH....if you should need HRT, do not be afraid to try progesterone in conjunction with your estrogen....you may be like me and negatively affected by progestin, which is synthetic, but may be ok with progesterone (I take Prometrium)....there is a difference. Good luck and take care. I wish you the best!
Thank you so much for sharing your experience! I am seeing an endocrinologist at the end of the month, and I am hoping we can have a dialogue and agree on the best treatment for me. I am adversely sensitive to Progestin as well, but I am very willing to try HRT if need dictates. Thank you so much again!
