I am interested in hearing from anyone who has had the onset of urinary symptoms since having the Mirena coil fitted, particularly urinary urgency.I would like to know about your experiences and what action you have taken to get help for your urinary symptoms. It would be interesting to know if you can specifically date symptoms to after the coil was fitted and if you have suffered urgency prior to the Mirena.

I had Mirena put in 6 weeks after my 2nd child. Within the next month I had a urinary tract infection, now I do get them every now and then. The next month I got another. The next month I went in with the symptoms, but no infection. I then went to see a urologist. Oh by the way I just turned 28. The doctor discovered that my bladder was so inflamed that I was having all the symptoms of an infection. I had my Mirena removed ASAP, I just had this feeling it was causing all my problems. I felt like some how my body was rejecting this thing in my body and causing my immune system to go down. I was constantly tired, moody, and had horrible abdominal pain. On top of the urinary tract infections I had a sinus infection that would not go away. My urologist put me on a 3 month dose of antibiotics. Since all this I have not had one urinary tract infection 6months ago. I feel great since having it removed, but three months ago I had a miscarriage a 10 weeks after two completely healthy pregnancies, I can't help but think in the back of my head that this had something to do with it. I am now 6 weeks pregnant and scared to death.

Hi - I had the Mirena fitted in Oct 07 and things weren't too bad to start, but was doubting it's suitability after reading postings on it after! By Easter I was losing it and was put on Anti depressents for, then in May found out in a random ultrasound that I had a large cyst on my right ovary. Had that removed immediately and was ok. Now since about November I have had severe sharp pain on right side lower ab going down through hip into leg and upto under rib cage. Every now and then I get a severe sharp pain through my back and right right my waist. The other main difference I have noticed is that my urgency to pee is unbelievable. I used to be iron bladder! But now its not so much the frequency but as soon as I need to go, I NEED to go and cannot hold it. Am now seeing gyna who did cyst op in 2 weeks and hopefully will get it sorted. Cos it's a constant pain at the moment.

I had the mirena in for about 9 months and had nothing but problems, weight gain, extreme lethargy, no sex drive, dry skin, strange body odour also perfumes that I had used for years now smelt like they had gone off when I wore them, but the main thing was constant pelvic pain and recurring UTIs, I felt that I constantly wanted to empty my bladder but even when I tried I never felt comfortable, always had a full bloated feeling in my abdomen....have also now developed IBS something I have never suffered from. I had the mirena removed 2 days ago under general anesthetic, as my dr could not locate the threads and after the absolute agony of her trying to retrieve the damn thing she said it would be best to do a hysterscopy and removal of the mirena under GA. Since the removal I have had very heavy cramps and heavy bleeding but the feeling of pressure in my bladder seems to have eased......feeling very low mood wise, but I think this is down to the obvious drop in hormones... but I am convinced I have done the right thing, and only wish I had done it sooner but as usual I was advised to give it a bit longer and told my symptoms could not possibly be due to the mirena...all i can say is listen to your own body and do not be fobbed off, only you know what you are suffering and if it is not working for you have it removed..

One more thing my gp actually told me that they are being pushed to recommend the mirena for heavy periods as it only cost £90 to supply and fit and is cheaper than a D & C or ablation...hence the reluctance of gp's to remove them, she also said that in her surgery over half of the women who have them fitted, have them removed within the first 3 months

I had a tiny bit of blood in urine that was analyzed today; they want me to see obgyn as they think it is either related to that or to another infection I have going on...just viral so I am now on antibiotics (had ear infection, now throat pain so they say it's post nasal drip, hence another long round of meds).......so after reading this sight and seeing urinary issues, I am starting to really think it could be the Mirena!
