Hi, i'm in the same boat as you. I'm also taking 12.5 metoprolol for palpitations and i don't like it. I have bad mind fog from it and feel like I can't think properly. I think I'm sensitive to it, or maybe b/c I don't weigh that much it's affecting me this way. Anyway I believe that at such a low dose as we are on, to wean off it you have to take the 12.5 every other day for a week and then you can stop. But you should call your Doctor just to check. I want to go off it too b/c I hate the drunken feeling I get from it. Good Luck!
i'm on 25 mg which is also a very low dose, however i have had lightheadeness, chills, cold hands and feet for years. i have grown to live with it. i get up everyday and workout at least an hour a day...everyday (maybe one day off)..i was on other meds and found them worse. if they're going to keep you alive you might have to get used to it. if anyone knows of any beta blocker that dosen't have side effects i would love to know.
I too am on !2.5 mg of toprol and want to get off of it... I am wondering if you have had any success in doing this yet or not. I would love to hear back either way.
Unfortunately I think ALL beta blockers have some kind of side effects, but for me the side effects from the toprol went away within about 2.5 weeks. I have also tried Inderal which was not for me, my heart rate went down to about 66, and I felt very lethargic and weird, only after 2 days. So I was doing well on the 12.5 metoprolol but then I had an episode of tachycardia after a large meal, even while on the met., so I increased it it 25mg, as originally prescribed, but I spilt the dose in half, half in the morning and half at night. This way I feel much less tired and pretty normal actually. I really want to get off it soon though, just because I don't want to be dependent on it.
Wow listen to anyone trying to figure out why you are feeling so badly. Toprol XL is insane. My HOUR went up one day to 160bpm and within a few hours it dropped by itself to 100 bpm.
So they stuck me on 50 mg a day then 100mg a day. I over the course of one year started having every side effect you have read on this thread. First it was major Broncho restriction but I wasn't told about that by my docs I thought its was allergies. I also had major heartburn, acid re flux and I never had history of any of these problems. But again was ignorant and just thought that was new stuff going on in my body. This is VERY IMPORTANT so please read besides the side effects I listed above I really didn't have any problems for a year and half HOUR was fine and BP was normal ( blood pressure was always norm. ). But after that my hell begun, I ended up going up to 200mg a day and I couldn't see one night went blind, started having massive vision problems. Constipation, major gas, I was always cold, tingling legs , gained 45lbs and I eat very well, then Blood Sugar attacks to the point I thought I was becoming a diabetic. Oh yes also dizzy spells and I also found out through a doc that it can attack your Sinuses and oh yeah I had that bad as well, at this point thought it all was me. I hated myself I thought I was a damn mess well I cut it down 50mg and the Vision problems went away for awhile. Then oh it all picked up a notch and I was on 150mg a day and I really started having problems very very low blood sugar attacks, felt like I was sinking in the ground, dizziness, silent migraines and Major Anxiety.
I have realized this med has taken over my life and my poor family has been to the ER and to countless Doc appointments and has suffered and watched me become a shell of a woman. From someone who always was on the go to locked up in my house because to afraid of what might happen once I get moving around. I clearly was being overdosed for 2 yrs. And my BP also likes to drop to low now once I start moving around so I'm fighting that now as well, its nearly passed me out countless times. I have now cut down 25mg a day down and yes my HOUR is resting anywhere from 90 to 100 but I know this will go away on a few weeks and then I'm going to cut down another cuz I tried to do it to fast before and two other beta blockers and that all made me so sick so I have read so much on this that this is the easiest and safest way to get off of it. I just want to say for anyone who has a real HEART problem then Toprol XL in small doses is fine but for those of us with either Resting Tachycardia or just Anxiety I have seen this IS not the Drug for you, your body becomes dependent on it and you have to increase it to get any relief for High Blood Pressure or a high heart rate and the side effects over time is not worth it. Please listen to your bodies and no its not just Anxiety and like me I still haven't found a good doctor to help me but please keep trying their out there and no your not crazy. Good luck
i stopped the generic. metoprolol (toprol xl) i was on 100mg. and i got were i couldn't think it was like everything was in slow motion. i had no energy, laid in bed at night for atleast an hour before i could fall asleep.. I quit smoking I have never had a history of high blood pressure so I figured it was the cigs.
I cut down to 50mgs b/c i had 100mg tabs. I know the doctor would not take me off b/c she said the med is fine. Its just you that has the problems , depression med. and all other types of med. she wanted me to take.
But i've never had a history of any of that until the Toprol.
I was taking 50 mgs for a month or so after i quit smoking then i started taking it every other day. But i didnt realize that it could cause such serious problems if you stop taken it without reducing it lower than 50mg.
I haven't went to the doctor i dont have insurance.
Could anyone tell me if i could have serious problems from not taking the med.
I feel fine.
I have lost 15 pounds i'm more active.
In 2007 i also quit the med. b/c I couldn't afford it. and i also lost weight..
So i know the med. makes me can weight. But the doctor seemed to think it didn't.
Dont stop thiug if u r using it regularly for a long time..b/c may be it create worse side effect after suddenly stopping it...so the best way is to stop this side effect is either change the drug or go graduallly decresing dose..the best way is later one...f still have prob with drug then ideal way to consult ur doctor..he wiill guide u further...thanks
Another story of the side effects of Metoprolol succinate. I had Aortic valve replacement 4/04 and was put on 50mg 1xday in the AM. Did this for some time and had no energy and wanted to sleep all the time. I went to therapy and discussed the problem with the nurse and she suggested I split the dosage in half and take it twelve hours apart. I felt a little better but not by much. I am still on the same regimen. I feel very tired most of the time. About a year ago I experienced tachy of 120 bpm. Went to a new Cadiaologist and was put on digoxin. Two weeks later I was holtored to check rhythym. No episodes until about two months age when bpm went to 120 for a short time. It smetimes happens during the nite and it wakes me and I can feel every beat. It si not a good feeling. I want to try to wean myself off this drug but the Docs probably will not agree. Like many of you reading this side effect site, I am wondering if this is as Good as it gets.
