I am recently out of the hosp after 9 days with COPD exas, pneumonia, flu. I have been on heavy antibiotics, steroids--home now for 1st time with oxygen---I feel GREAT.First time in years I feel like I have a life to live. Like a veil has been lifted. I'm scared for this feeling to go away--what is it? the steroids?? the oxygen?? Whatever it is I need to know so I can fight for it and stop just waiting to die.

Hi my friend,

I'm, gald your out of the hospital, I hate that place. The steroids always give me a VERY euphoric feeling for the first couple of weeks. I just want to give you a heads up on the crash. For me anyway all the feeling turns
to fatigue and a couple of other issues. I would just try and get off them as soon as posible. Good stuff for short term issues. Very bad long term!

Good luck and enjoy it while it last!!!

Thanks for your response--I was hoping it was the oxygen...How does one know when is the shortest time for the prednesone? They are tapering me off now--4th day of 20m out of 8---I think I was at 60 then 40 --If they do IV's I might have got IV steroid in hosp--still haven't really got to talk to my own Dr about this but they haven't been particularly proactive about my care--Once said would rather see me on the Advair steroids for 20yrs vs. one course of prednisone...appreciate your sharing your insight--thanks

I'm sure the oxygen helps. One never knows how short or long the path to get off Prednisone is. I have gotton off quickly and suffered greatly! I have endured the long wean and was much more successful in the pain and side effect department. The problems for most is not getting down that's fairly easy (However you may have several different personalities while on this road). It's hitting the wall at 10mgs especially for me at 5mgs that's when you slow down. I went down 2.5mg every 3 weeks. If I didn't feel well I stayed on it. I also moved to the every other day weaning at 10mg. So that's 10mg every other day for 3 weeks and on down. I felt bad for about 3 - 5 days after each reduction. I then stayed on my last 2.5mgs for 6 weeks because I didn't feel right. Then It takes about 2 - 6 months to get everything back to normal. This worked for ME anyways. I was also always looking for an answer on how to proceed with my wean with no one ever answering me, especially my Dr's. Advair is simply just more steroids! Please read and read about all the toxins you are exposed to everyday that truly impact your breathing. It should be your absoluate last choice!!! I implore you to stay away from them, educate yourself on everything about health and especially your health and most of all trust how YOU feel. Don't let someone tell you "you don't look sick" or "your fine" or you don't have this or that. It does get better!!!

Please make good choices for yourself.

Ok. I have been on this med for 3 yrs. Worst case of adult asthma the docs have seen. I have been in the hospital and put on 500 mg steroids in my IV for 4 days and then tapered to 60mg. I am on 25mg and can not get down, cause I got a virus and it activated the asthma. I have never crashed on these meds. I believe that because I know if I DO NOT TAKE THEM, then I will not be able to breath. I know I would die. So I think I am thankful for this meds. I have a ton of side effects including when I look in the mirror I do not recognize myself. I am hump on my back, bloated ,big weight gain, teeth breaking, diabetes, thin skin and slow to heal, and the list goes on. But I am still alive. So keep that thought and I am sure you will always feel better. And that is probably why you do feel better. God bless ya.

You will feel great on a high dose - and then reality sets in when they start to decrease it. Unfortunately it is the only drug that will treat the condition I have, so I have to live with it. I tell people "on 60mg I felt like I could lick the world and now on 15 mg. the world has me licked".

Thanks momof11kids (OMG) bless you and mormor for your response. Tomorrow I will go down to 10m from 20 for last 10 days--hope it's not bad. Momof11--have you had allergy testing? My friend had a bad spell like that a couple years ago--she even had to be intibated--turned out she was literally killing herself with her $500 down comforter and pillows--she got rid of them and the juniper around her house and now uses no meds and no more asthma--

Thanks for asking. Yes i have had allergy tests and the only thing is air pollition. The problem is the humidity and the dare dirty air . I need to leave Mich. and go where the air is clean and humidity is low. Dr orders but we do not have the bank acc like the doc has. HA But with 11 kids that is not easy to do. He said we need to go and try different state. OMG like I can do that. Hope you feel better!!

Gosh you would think will 11 kids my spelling would be better. I meant darn dirty air, not dare dirty air. And he wants me to try different states-not different state.
