I was giving prednisone for only 5 days (not sure about dose, but it tapered to one pill on the last day) for a bronchitis induced severe asthma attack. I have only had asthma twice in my 50 years, both times associated with a bad case of bronchitis. The "doc in the box" reduced his original dosage due to the 3 corisone injections I recently had in my spine. After reading these posts I feel grateful I wasn't on a higher, longer term dose. I have some of the same side effects listed here including uncontrollable appetite, fat gain around the middle, water weight gain, constantly having to urinate, superhuman energy, heart palpitations, and approximately two weeks after finishing, I began to get a mustache (hairs that were previously white became brown over a two week period). I have read on the internet and been told by my pharmacist that this is temporary. I have also read and been told that the 2mg estradiol I take every day since my hysterectomy causes the body to retain and not rid itself of the steroids as it normally would (estrogen is actually listed as drug interaction with prednisone). The doctor in the box apparently just ignored this interaction and prescribed it anyway. However the main reason I am posting is a very strange possible side effect that occurred approximately 1 week after my final dose. I was awakened in the middle of the night with SEVERE pain (felt like bone pain, not muscle) in my right knee that lasted until morning. By mid morning it was gone. The next night I had the same experience but in both knees. It lasted about 5 more days, gradually tapering in intensity, and then just went away. I do have severe arthritis in my lumbar and cervical spine, having had surgeries to repair injuries from a snowmobiling accident. I have normal arthritis elsewhere for a 50 year old, but have NEVER had issues with my knees. Has anyone had this strange symptom? None of my doctors (internist, rheumatologist, physiatrist - who gave me the injections and prescribed physical therapy for my spine) had any explanation. The only explanation I have is the prednisone because I had taken the Z-pac (antibiotic) with no side effects several times in the past. Weird! Incidentally, I am off the prednisone for about 5 weeks, am still hungry all the time, still fat, still bloated. Unfortunately the extra energy is gone. Best of luck to everyone on this strange drug. My heart sincerely goes out to all of you on long term therapy. God bless.

Hi,

I had the exact same thing. There is one more horrible side effect this deadly drug has and its severe bone loss. On short doses it causes a quick reduction in bone loss that manifest into bone pain not muscle pain.

I have been off Prednisone for about 6 month and still have the effects.
However, I was on it much longer then you. My "bone pain" is finally subsided but it was awful and it was just like you said. You won't get a "doctor in a box" (I love that) to read about, much less care about this issue. I learned my dx from a very prominent health practitioner.

It will all be gone soon, hang in there. Sounds like your pretty tough.

Do you have that hump on your back. I do and that bugger burns all day and night. Driving me nuts. Keep your since of humor. (doc in the box) Love it. Ha Good luck

Alot of dr,s donot tell people about all the special side affects that go along with this drug. I am a 46 year old that has fought asthma my whole life and i have done many test to help get different meds on the market but for the life of me i cant understand why we cant find a med that is better than prednisone that has not as many side affects because the leg pain your describing is from the prednisone and i deal with that all the time. Another symtom is a feeling of depression that doesnt go away while you are cutting down so severe that you can think suicide but they dont tell you that ! I have to use burst of preds when i get a cold or infection because that is all that keeps me alive because nothing else works for severe asthma patients so your damned if you do or damned if you dont!! Now i go to a bone specialist that tells me the effects on my bones is not good. When i go to bed at nite and im on preds or just cutting down my knees kill me i just shake from the pain but i will live my life the best i can and try to go on but when i look in the mirror i see a woman that needs plastic surgery from the all the effects that prednisone has taken on my skin and my body and i deal with that daily ...I feel very unatractive in front of my husband and its just not very fun....Im sorry to all those who have to depend on prednisone to live a normal life.

I will have been on prednizone for 13 days. I was taking it for iritis (inflammation of the iris) My vision became blurry with mass collection of white blood cells settling at the bottom of my iris. I am taking 20mg 3 times a day for 7 days and then tapering down to 2 for 3days then 1 for three days then off. I like everyone else has those darn side effects. Moon face (although my husband won't amid it) Insomnia, weight gain, nervousness etc. But last night I did have severe pain in both knees plus the joints in my toes and my palm on my left hand seemed to hurt as well. The pain in my knees was so bad I got up in the middle of the night to take an Advil, which seemed to do nothing only to get up in another two hours to try two Tylenol. Nothing seemed to help and no matter what position (knees bent, straight, etc) I tried the pain was unbearable. I managed to take a shower and get ready for work as usual this morning but the pain was then feeling more like a tightness and swelling. Again I took a prednizone this morning so of course I got through the day. Tonight?? Who knows. As I sit and type I can feel the tightness returning. I too long for a full goodnight sleep. Tomorrow will be my last pill and I am hoping this eventually goes away and never returns and my body returns to normal. The iritis is still there even though they are taking me off the prednizone (the white blood cells have stopped collecting). I also have been having to take Pred Forte (steroid eye drops) as well. My vision is slowly getting better.
