My son (now 6) was put on Singulair at 8 months old for asthma and has been o it since. He has never had an appetite and is quite underweight. He complains of stomach pains and headaches daily. At age 4 he was sent to a pediatric GI and neurologist and any brain or gastro issues were ruled out. No one could figure out what was wrong. He has sensory issues and just recently was referred to a psychiatrist for occupational therapy. It was at this appointment that it was suggested that the Singulair is responsible and since he has been on it for the majority of his life we were unable to make the connection. He has been off of it for 2 weeks now and has not complained of headaches or stomach pain at all. His eating habits are slightly better, but not great. Hopefully his appetite will improve over time. I wish we had only known sooner. I feel like such a terrible mother!

You are just one of the many mothers that loved their children enough to get treatment for an illness, not a terrible mom.You will see improvement and I am so happy your healthcare professional took the initiative to remove the drug, that is what your pediatrician should have done when GI symptoms were present,as they are a listed side effect.God bless you and your little one. Please report your situation to the FDA when you see improvement. You can also visit www.parentsforsafety.org great information site .Tell your physician about this site and the parents advocacy site, they can learn more there than the Merck website.Kate

Jilla,

You are NOT a terrible mother and this is NOT your fault. Your son's primary care, gastro and neuro physicians should have known that your son's symptoms were possible side effects of singualir. They have been on the label a long time. Thank goodness the psychiatrist did! I am so glad to hear your son is improving off Singulair.

My son suffered for 5 1/2 years while on this med. I too had no idea his symptoms could have been caused by Singulair because neither his doctors nor his pharmacy informed me. He is virtually symptom free after almost 5 months off the drug and has a bigger appetitie than ever!

Please accept Kate's invitation to visit our advocacy site.

Best wishes,
Jenna

My son age 10 months has just been prsribed this medication Singulair due to sleep apnea. The physician is trying to rule out wheter his anenoids and tonsils need to be removed. I am a very frustrated parent I really do not know what to do. I would rather not have him in surgery at such a young age due to anesthia, and also this medication is really giving me second thoughts on whether I should even bother giving it to him. Any suggestions?
