I had the Mirena for 5 month last year, when I was 43. Had a lot of side effects so I had it removed. 3 months later, my period had not yet returned and I started having hot flashes....blood tests confirmed that I was fully post-menopausal at 43!! A year later, I am feeling almost back to normal, but have to take HRT because my body seems to not be producing any estrogen. The hormone in the Mirena didn't just stay local fo rme, my blood tests showed that.
My understanding is the the copper IUD isn't recommended for anyone with heavy bleeding/periods as that can actually make it worse. I think the Paragard is the one that is available here in the U.S. You might want to do some research on that (I'm guessing you will after your experience with the Mirena!!).
If you continue to have sweating/hot flashes after removal, insist that your Dr test your E2 estrogen and your FSH levels. A lot of us have had this happen...not as rare as they might like to believe.
Good luck and take care!!
I had Mirena put in March 2008 and it's one of the biggest mistakes I have ever made. I started out having horrible headaches and joint pain and I have bled almost every single day since November 1st with horrific cramping, bleeding and clots. My face STAYS broke out and my skin looks terrible. I have no energy and I am always depressed and upset about everything. I have a good mind to remove it myself because I am in so much pain. Sex is very painful and my abdomen stays so tender, not to mention my back hurts all the time. I hate this thing and it's got to go.
I had my mirena put in on 13 August 2008. Immidiately, my skin turned very bad. I had to take medication to make me look normal. Luckily, this symptoms subsided. For the pas few months I have been experiencing headaches, sometimes dizzyness, fuzzy eyes and the latest, I am loosing hair like mad. Could this be the mirena or just that time of year or age. I went to my doctor to take it out in January this year, but eventually, he did not take it out. He told me it can not be because of the mirena. My period is very strange this month. I have a little bit of spotting the one day then the next it is gone. The next week the same thing happens (after I have experienced spotting free months up till now). I also had it put in as bc, but now I am not so sure if I must have it removed or not. What if I take it out and the symptoms does not go away? I there perhaps someone out there, a doctor for this matter, who can confirm this symtoms to be related to the mirena????
