Please share the information about Singulair on the Parents United for Pharmaceutical Safety & Accountability website: www.parentsforsafety.org with your grandson's parents:
On the "news" page, you will see a link to the FDA statement advising parents and physicians to be alert for "neuropsychiatric events" in patients taking Singulair. There is also a link to the Mental Health Association in PA's Behavioral Side Effects warning for Singulair.
It would not be inappropriate for you to mail a list of the side effects on Singulair's label (go to www.DailyMed.nlm.nih.gov) along with a copy of the FDA statement and MHAPA warning to your grandson's physician. The physician may not have this information. Parents have been reporting to Parents United that their children's physicians were unaware of psychiatric side effects, including anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts and actions.
My son suffered terribly from this medication for 5 1/2 years because I didn't know his symptoms could be related to Singulair. He also had horrible tantrums and when he was in preschool, his teachers insisted he be evaluated for ADHD because of his behavior. ADHD was not diagnosed. His doctors never told me about the possible psychiatric side effects, even though many have been on the label for years. I don't know if they themselves knew! I didn't get this info from the pharmacy either. My son no longer takes Singulair and no longer has the problems he had while he was taking it.
Best wishes.
