Have you by chance had your estrogen level checked? At 45, the progestin in the Mirena could have caused such an imbalance that it affected your hair in a very real way....something that might not have happened w/o the Mirena. The reason I ask is that my 5 months with the Mirena thrust me into premature menopause at 43. I didn't have hair loss -- that must be the only side effect that I DIDN'T have! I am now having to take HRT to get me to normal menopause age. If you start having hot flashes, tell your Dr and insist on getting your E2 level tested.
ALmost EVERYONE is losing fistfuls of hair a day with the Mirena. My familiy has been complaining for a year that my hair is in EVERYTHING. It IS!!! It falls out constanly. Its all over everything like a dog shedding! Women on here have been told that the side effects are really due to age even the 20 and 30 year olds!!! Can you imagine??? WHAT is wrong with these doctors?????
I just turned 31 and my hair has been thinning alot and it just feels different. It feels really oily. My ob said that its just from giving birth and it will grow back but my daughter is 10 months old. Well I know its the mirena because of all the other side effects that came along with this. I did start taking my prenatal vitamins again and that has helped my hair so im thinking that mirena must cause some kind of vitamin defciency as well as the hormonal imbalance.
Read down the old posts as I have written about my hair loss. I had all the other symptoms too and had the mirena removed last May. I am still battling hair loss and it had turned into a scarring hair loss condition called lichen plano planaris. I use steroids and am on men's rogaine to try and recover some of my loss. I, too, had the thyroid checked, (twice) multiple lupus tests, skin biopsies, etc. and this is what they found. Good luck and don't give up. My doctors initially thought I was nuts until I found a dermo. who listened to me!
I, too, had massive hair loss.....half my hair and I only had the mirena for 3 months. Upon on removal, the hair loss continued for 6 months. The dermatologist confirmed that it was from the synthetic hormone in mirena and told me that it would probably take 6 months for my hair to return to its normal loss pattern. Hair loss has stopped and I have tons of new growth. Still struggling with a few other side effects though.....
Yes, I too have experienced many of the symptoms listed. The most obvious ones have been hair loss and weight gain. I kept thinking maybe it was my age, 47, and just the way life was going to be. I also have a thyroid condition which had been stable for years and now was fluctuating which caused several changes in my medication. I just visted my OB/GYN for my annual PAP and we discussed my conditions. He informed me the only way to know if Mirena was causing my problems was to remove it. I had paid for the Mirena since it was not covered by my insurance and hated to not get the maximum benefit. However after researching the mirena more in depth, I am going have it removed ASAP! I do believe Mirena and the doctors should not "harp it's praises with virtually no side effects" to unsuspecting patients such as myself without letting them know more about the more severe problems. I hope to return to my former self soon.
I have had my mirena for 1yr and i too have noticed hair coming out. It really just started about 2 months ago. I thought it was shampoo or my hair dye. I have also noticed moodswings and have been very depressed. I started thinking about the hormones and wondered if it was the mirena and the more I started reading about everyone else on the mirena I had similar symptoms. Its very stressful to see your hair fall out everytime you shower. I have decided to get it removed ASAP. Im affraid if I dont I will loose all my hair. Also had very bad acne after a month and the only way I can keep it tame is by using Acne Free. Its great I have no periods but I dont think its worth hairloss or acne. I feel your pain......
