I'm surprised at all the comments about Mirena...about how painful the insertion was and how horrible the side effects are. I can honestly say that I've had NONE of those issues. I'm 28, and I've had Mirena for 2 years now. I have NO children, but the procedure was NOT painful. It was slightly uncomfortable for a few moments while she inserted it, but I did not receive any anesthetic. I had slight cramping for a few days, which is normal. Over the course of several months after having the Mirena put in, my periods began to subside and after about 4 or 5 months, I had no period at all. I have noticed absolutely no difference in my sex drive, weight, mood, hair growth, etc. I recommend Mirena to anyone who is interested in it. Of course, every woman is different! And, our bodies all react differently. So, if you're interested in Mirena, please don't make a judgment call based solely on this message board or any other message board, for that matter. Some of us have had horrible experiences. Some of us have had great experiences. But, your decision should come from the ONLY two people who know YOUR body best: you and your doctor. Good luck!

If all is peaches and cream, why on earth did you happen to stumble on a Mirena SIDE EFFECT forum? We're not here to bash the Mirena, just state the facts and give awareness to the very real possibility of an adverse reaction to this device. Your post makes me skepitical. Why waste your time posting if you're completely satisified? Why are you here? How much are the makers of the Mirena paying you? LOL

I happened upon this board because of a conversation I had with a group of girlfriends last night. I don't have a period at all anymore, but I wasn't sure if that was the same for all women with Mirena. One of the girls is seriously considering getting Mirena and I wanted to research accurate info about periods in women with an IUD, so I googled "Mirena period" and here I am! :)

I'm in NO WAY discounting the side effects that other women have encountered. I just wanted potential readers to know that not all women experience all/any side effects and that they should make a final decision after talking to their own doctor about the pros AND cons first.

I'm not getting paid by Mirena! lol. :p I'm just a satisfied customer.

I understand that Mirena is working great for you, but Mirena is mainly for woman who have children. It's not recommended for someone without children, maybe that's the difference?

You know, I thought about that too, while I was reading through a lot of these posts. Maybe the major difference is that I've never been pregnant.

My doctor recommended Mirena for me because I'm in a committed relationship and we knew we didn't want to have children for quite some time. So, she said it was a viable option for me, and I took it. :)

I guess maybe I'll check back in about 5 years after I've had a baby. But truthfully, I hope I never experience any of the things these other women have gone through with Mirena. I'll just consider myself extremely lucky!

Hello! I've been reading though all of the blogs today and am surprised to hear about all of the negative side effects of the Mirena. I've had the Mirena since May of 08 and experienced minimal side effects; however, I do feel more bloated than normal. I have gained some weight, although a bit of the weight gain was due to my own inactivity and I'm slowly getting back into jogging and working out. I feel better...yet still notice the belly bloat and the fact I'm slower to lose weight while on the Mirena.

I don't get a perod anymore, in fact, I haven't had a period since June of 08. I spotted for about a month after getting the Mirena inserted, had a regular period in June, and have spotted once in the past 9 months and only for a day. My anxiety has risen after reading these blogs and speaking with my good friend who also has a Mirena IUD. I have never had a child and this may have something to do with my minimal side effects. My boyfriend is unable to feel the strings and I'm not either; my clinician trimmed them at my first check up.

I thouroughly agree with the reccomendation of Breebee77...listen to your body and discuss all possible birth control options with your clinician. I volunteer at a reproductive clinic as a patient educator and have listened to women share very positive stories about their IUD and clinicians at the clinic highly reccomend this form of birth control for many women. Individual and collective stories in regards to birth control are incredibly important to share and to read for women exploring their birth control options. If you do not feel ready to get a Mirena IUD, the Nuva Ring is a great hormonal alternative for folks who may regularly forget to take a birth control pill daily. Or...Cycle Beads may be an appropriate non hormonal method. Good luck to everyone researching their options...!
