I had open heart surgery August 23rd 2006 for a conginital heart defeat (Aortic Valve replaced with mechanical St Jude valve). I wanted a bio valve but Drs insisted I should have the mechanical valve because of my age (45 at the time). Prior to my heart surgery I was a performer, singer/songwriter/actress/comedianne and I loved what I did. It was my life. Now, after 2+ years post-op and on Warfarin (7.5 mg daily for life) I feel like life has ended and I'm just a walking dead person. The effects I feel daily are as follows... Dizziness Severe Headaches Blurred vision Memory Loss Fatigue Weight Gain Trouble concentating Fluttering effect in my head/ears- Hard to explain Hair loss Unexplained pains in chest & left side of my body Unable to sleep well Tiredness- even when I've done nothing to be tired for Nausea Gas & Diarrhea off and on teeth pain- Like I've drank something very cold feeling in my head similar to a brain freeze- like you ate ice cream too fast Night bleeds in my month- wake up with a mouth full of blood daily What do think, is that enough?? I'm going in tomorrow for a cat scan because the headaches have been so bad they feel I need to be checked for brain tumor and/or internal bleeding. When I tell the Drs I think this is due to Wafarin they pratically laugh in my face as if to say, "Silly silly woman, don't be foolish! We know whats best for you. Remember, we saved your life!" Really? Did you?! I want nothing more than to get off this rat poison and regain my life, but to do so could mean a stroke or heart attack. I would go under the knife again to have the mechanical valve removed and replaced with a biological valve, but do you think my insurance company (Kieser) would pay for a "silly" thing like that? Right! Welcome to the greatest country in the world! I'm going to start a website to help people like us. I want your stories, please send me your info, together we might make a change, what can it hurt to try? Email me ****** B.

Hello, I am 28 years old. I have ceen on this drug since i was 25 after some birth control pills caused a DVT in my leg which traveled and collapsed my lungs causing a Pulmonary Embolism. A year later I also had a stroke. The issue is that I just realized what was causing my misery.
I have experienced:
60 lbs of weight gain (regardless of dieting and excercise) before this it was easy to drop weight
memory loss and confusion ( I thought I was crazy, this doesnt happen all the time but If i am having a conversation I may forget what we were talking about)
Blurred vision
Acne
Headaches (I never had them before)
dry itchy skin (have to use the vaseline lotion, nothing else works)
dry ithchy scalp (have to use t-gel moisterizing shampoo)

What I have not experienced, thank GOD is hair loss. I am researching alternative methods. The funny thing is that i have been doing some research and found that the main herbs and vitamins they tell us not to take are the ones that could heal us....Feel free to email me at tfletcher10@gmail.com

B. Have been on 5 mg coumadin for 15 yrs due to atrial fibrillation. Do well with no side effects (I know of). Last month my insurance said I had to change to generic, warfarin, or pay more for brand name (coumadin). Took warfin ,same dose 5mg, and for 2 days my mouth would fill with blood. Went back to coumadin and paid the extra cost.and have not any any blood loss since. Maybe you should try coumadin (brand) and I would think at a lower dose like 5mg which I have been on for the 15 yr. I am 78 yrs old.

Did you have a bleed in your head? My husband did and had to have surgery twice to get all the blood out. The headaches and nausea indicate subdural hematomas. They should never laugh at you. People are dying from coumadin interacting with other medications, especially antibiotics. I want to warn everyone. Please check the interactions of coumadin with all the other medications you are taking. Doctors DON'T. I know. I am a registered nurse. Aspirin 325 mg po daily is a blood thinner too with less drug interactions. (but just think how much the drug companies are making off of rat poisioning!) (My husband was taking coumadin and then was prescribed Bactrim for an infection. The coumadin interacted with the Bactrim causing the bleeding in his head.)

lsinche . . . I suggest that you find a naturopathic . a dr. who believes to treat naturally, not all these drugs. The dr. would be able to wean you from coumadin and help you any other health issues. . . . . if I can help you, just let me know. Best wishes.

Hi, I am a 23 year old female. I have been on Warfarin/Coumadin since December of 2001 (going on 8 YEARS now) and will be for the rest of my life. I have an 8 inch DVT in my left leg that they say is in there like cement, I've had pulmonary emboli, and various mini strokes. I also developed more clots in the hospital a few years back when I had to have my large intestine removed because of severe ulcerative colitis and colon cancer, which they were able to quickly dissolve in the hospital. My side effects include:

* vision problems (20/20 vision before and now it gets worse every year)
* trouble concentrating (used to be in honors classes in high school, but it gets more and more difficult to concentrate)
* severe migraines
* dizziness/ light headed/ fatigue/ tiredness
* hair loss (I think this can probably go for any long term medications though)

I believe Coumadin gave me the ulcerative colitis because it would hurt my stomache really bad if I did not eat with it. This isn't written on the prescription bottle, but it should be.

As far as having trouble sleeping, I have that as well, but I'm not exactly sure of when it started.

I forgot to mention I take a high dose of 8mg-10mg of Coumadin a day.

God bless all of you and what you are going through. I have been through and continue to go through it. The most important thing is to get your INR checked regularly, especially if you start taking a new medication. I had one pharmacist tell me that steroids would not affect my INR. To my surprise, it changed drastically (triple what it was supposed to be) and made me very sick.

Thank you for reading! Take care everyone and God bless!
