My teenage daughter was taking generic Wellbutrin (manufactured by Watson pharmaceuticals) 150 mg. daily for about 3 weeks or so and started having serious hair loss on the top of her head. The prescribing psychiatrist told her to stop the medication and after about 2 weeks, the hair loss has stopped almost completely. I have read a number of blogs including this one that indicate that hair loss is a side effect yet the Wellbutrin trials only listed hair loss as a side effect for less than 1% of patients. Given the U.S. Supreme court ruling today that says that even if the FDA has approved a medication, a pharmaceutical company is still responsible for fully reporting side effects and can in fact be sued in individual states if they do not provide sufficient warning, I would be interested in hearing ideas of how we can put more pressure on the manufacturers of Wellbutrin and its generic equivalent so that they give better warning of this side effect.

According to the generic blog for wellbutin, budeprion, there are tons of horror stories of its side effects compared to wellbutrin itself. Apparently, it's not like welbutrin AT ALL. That's where we have to take action. People have fine results on Welbutrin, and they switch, or even start of on the generic and the nightmares begin. Check it out: http://www.medications.com/se/budeprion

I have been taking Wellutrin XL in genetric form about 5 months. I feel like I'm going bald. Everytime I wash my hair I get hands full of it and it's thinned out sooo much. I called and asked my doctor to switch me to something diiferent. The only positive thing out of this is that I lost 20lbs from it. I did'nt notice any other results because I still felt depressed. I just continued taking them because doc said it takes time to get it in your system.

Thanks to those who replied to my message. Does anyone know if it is possible to get a list from the FDA of complaints that were made to various pharmaceutical companies regarding side-effects? Also, is there any advocacy group that might offer help to force pharmaceuticals to post the complaints that they have received about side effects on their websites- these are publicly regulated multi-national corporations - they should be obligated to post complaints so the public is fully informed of potential side effects particulary when there are so many blogs reporting hair loss yet Watson pharmaceuticals only reports it as a "rare" side effect on their insert. I'm questioning how "rare" it might be.

I am 42 and have been taking budeprion for well over a year. My hair has been thinning like crazy. I decided to google for info and lo and behold, it is most likely caused by the drug! I used to have lovely thick naturally curly hair. Now I am losing hair faster than it can be replaced and I look awful. I dread having to test out new meds, cuz this one works for my depression, well most of the time. Anyway, thought I would ad my experience here in case it is useful to anyone.
