My son (14 years old) was given levaquin for a sinus and ear infection 2 weeks ago. Around the same time he began practices for his high school baseball team. He complained about his legs being stiff and aching. We assumed it was the intense practices causing his muscles to ache. After a week on the drug, he could barely walk and his knees were swollen. We were very concerned and looked up the side effects of levaquin on the internet. We were shocked and angry when we found out that levaquin should not be given to children under the age of 18 because on the possibility of joint and tendon problems. Today we went to the orthopedist and he drained a lot of fluid off of both knees (it looked like about a 1/2 cup from each). The doctor thinks it has to be a side effect of the drug, because the symptoms began at the same time. He doesn't think after examining the knee and having him perform certain tasks that he has damaged any tendons. He has all the symptoms of rheumatiod arthritis. He is very athletic and plays competitive sports and we are praying that his knees are not permanently damaged by this drug. Parents please research all drugs and there side effects before giving them to your children! Doctor's DO make mistakes!! The pharmacist failed us too.

OMG, not this mess to an adolescent! He has been burned by this drug, and it doesn't get any better! I am now on my second ankle pain and have been ordered orthotic braces. This is for the levaquin damage that no dr. will acknowledge, mind you! I finally got my primary to concede yesterday that this is really happening out there and that finally admitted to the tragedy of it all. To make a long story short, do not wait to 'see what happens' with time for your son: only an mri of the painful area will answer your questions! I am six months into this and it just doesn't resolve itself. I have one precaution for you in the meanwhile: if the dr orders prednisone for your son to help his pain, please be aware that it, also, can cause tendon rupture!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just got through a round of it and it exacerbated the damage. You have an uphill battle ahead of you, just remember not to give up when you are faced with total indifference from medical professionals while you try to right the wrong which has been done to your son. Good luck, and keep us posted!

Forget MRIs they dont pick up the damage. Healthy tendons are pink, ruin tendons are grey and it dont show on an MRI. MRI s are B+W!!!

There is no excuse for this kind of error. Unless your dr. can't read there is just no excuse!!!! Just so you know, tendon ruptures can happen months or years after being poisoned by this drug. Get a good lawyer and make sure your son wll have money for college because he probably won't have a career in sports. So sorry about what's happened. God bless.

I agree with all of the above. My tendon rupture didn't happen till 9 months out and then my distal bicep tendon spontaneously ruptured. It completely separated from the bone. I have always been in good shape and very athletic. Do not underestimate the damage that did (or might still) occur. This is not an "error", it is a tragedy. Given the length of time the medical community has been prescribing this stuff and maiming people with it you would think they would catch on. I wish the best for your son.
