I have been doing a trial and error thing w/ all my meds and I suspect that Singulair may be the culprit in my insomnia. Since I went down on Cymbalta, it has helped but last night I did not sleep a wink. I took xanax even and was up all night. Finally got up at 4. Singulair has some ingredients that are the same as anti-histamines which have always affected my sleep but I have copd and am afraid to not take it.It is supposed to open your airways and I use Advair which has a steroid in it and I have no appetite. I still gain weight even though I'm not eating much.Dont know what to do. jo

Insomnia is a side effect of Singulair, and on this site, other adults have reported weight gain with Singulair. If you are not happy with the way you are feeling on Singulair, call your doctor and ask for another medication. If you are not satisfied with your doctor's advice, seek a second oopinion.

FYI, and I encourage you to independently verify the following:
In asthma, Advair is more effective than Singulair, which is considered adjunct therapy. Also, Singulair is not effective for everyone. It is not a significant medication in the treatment of asthma or allergies. Singulair has not been found more effective than antihistamines in the treatment of allergic symptoms.

I don't know how Advair rates in COPD treatment, but I believe Singulair is an investigational drug, rather than an established drug in the treatment of COPD (again, I encourage you to independently verify this). I do know that it is not approved by FDA for treatment of COPD. While some studies have shown that Singulair improves COPD symptoms, it is not conisdered first-line, second-line, even third-line clinically relevant by doctors at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco, who indicate that it may be useful when the patient has exhausted all other treatment options and also has allergies. http://www.medpagetoday.com/MeetingCoverage/CHEST/11541

In a 2005 study sponsored by Merck and Kaiser Permanente, "A Pilot Study of Montelukast Sodium (Singulair) in Older Adults With Asthma or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease," results showed that improvement in asthma control was mixed. A small improvement in the montelukast group was seen using one of the two control measures. There was no difference in lung function, asthma symptom scores, health care utilization, or health-related quality of life between the treatment and control groups.

Good luck to you and I hope you feel better soon!
