Have been on simvastatin on and off for 15 months now. First of all 10mg came off for a while - cholesterol level up to 7.6 again so was put on 40mg. Very nauseous and came off the 40mg. Went back on to 10mg in Nov. and since then no nausea at all. At present I am getting terrible pain when laying down in my right leg from my hip into my buttock right down to my foot. It is similar to cramp in leg but it lasts sometimes for a couple of hours. Cramp usually disappears in a few minutes but it is the same sort of sensation. Also needle-like pains in my hand and foot. Above symptoms only since going onto Simvastatin. Would be interested in any others have these symptoms too. Trouble is damned if you take them and damned if you dont. Current research does show however that there is no benefit to women over 60 taking these wretched pills - everybody reading this should try and get or borrow the book by Dr Malcolm Kendrick entitled The Great Cholesterol Con (Dundee UK GP) written in 2008 who also is of this opinion. I am not advising not to take Simvastatin but please do research and read this book and reach your own decisions.

First of all I want to tell you that I have nothing to do with health care. I am just an ordinary lady who became very upset about what I experienced of health care when it came to my old father and a very close friend.

Your symptoms/side effects are not unusual.

I have not felt them myself, but I remember what a very dear friend - who was on Simvastatin for years - used to tell me.

The pain in my leg feels like fire.
I have an "iron rod" right through my hips.
It feels as if I am walking on broken glass.

His list of side effects was very long.
He was also on other medications.

When the side effects started to appear he got different diagnosis and medications for his new symptoms.

None of his doctors/nurses ever thought in the terms of side effects or diseases started because of medications.

I did, when I finally had an Internet-connection, but it was too late.

Congratulations - you have taken the time to find out more about statins and that`s what I think everyone should do.

You should know why you start a certain medicaion and also why you stop and how you should do it in the best way (usually tapering).

I have also read Malcolm Kendricks book (UK) - The Great Cholesterol Con.

I have also read another book with the same title but by another writer, Anthoy Colpo. It has a lot of information.

Here are som more books and webb-sites:

Lipitor - thief of memory + other books (Duane Graveline)

There is a Forum with lots of stories, uncluding Duane Gravelines own.
Apart from that there is lots of information about side effects etc.

I would advise you to stop taking the statin IMMEDIATELY. If you're lucky, the pain will go away in a few weeks. If you don't stop taking the drug it will only get worse, even at low doses like 10mg. There are natural ways to lower your cholesterol without these drugs. Although I am not thoroughly convinced that cholesterol is the culprit it is made out to be by the medical community, I guess it isn't necessarily a bad thing to lower the numbers if you can do it without killing the rest of your body in the process. You can do this with cinnamon, garlic and a pill named Cholest Off Complete sold by Nature Made. You can find it in most pharmacies. I get it at Osco drugs - that's the same as Albertson's if you're in the western states. Or go to www.cholestoff.com to find a store near you. It does work and it's completely natural, with no side effects.

Hello and thank you for contacting me. I am in Warwick England but will make enquiries about Cholest Off complete that you mention. My GP has recently now told me my blood pressure is sky-high and has put me on a b/p lowering drug named Amlodopine which is 10 worse as regards side effects but I notice medications.com dont have this drug listed. Up until relatively recently I would not even take a pain-killer unless it was absolutely necessary! After three weeks of constant headache, burning cheeks, nausea and constant tiredness (which apparently are quite common side effects) will go see my GP on Monday to see if there is another bp lowering drug without these awful side effects. Bye just nowe regards Anne
