I have been on Prednisone for 3 months for PMR (polymyalgia rheumatica)and so far the pros have far outweighed the cons. PMR is an extremely painful condition that affects the shoulders and hips especially at night and early morning, I spent all of December and January sitting upright in a chair trying to sleep, untill I was diagnosed and prescribed Prednisone and oxycodone. I started at 25 mg and I'm now down to 15mg. The side effects that I do have are weight gain (about 10 pounds), mild mood swings and insomnia.I am an avid bicycle rider (25-35 training miles per day on week days a lot more over the weekend),I am 60 years old and now back on the bike. The strange thing is after about one month back in training I am much stronger this year than last even with the added weight. Last year, a solo, 30 mile hard ride I would average about 17 mph this week I went out on my same training ride at 19.4 mph, over 2 mph faster. Everything I read about Prednisone says that it wastes muscles, but I have become stronger. Is it possible that it's the Prednisone?

Your stronger because you feel less pain. Please stop your bragging on a site dedicated to people who "suffer' from this deadly medication. There are people (hundreds) on this site alone who's lives have been ruined by Prednisone. Please spare everyone your conquest of bicycle riding
so they may share their hope and strength to just survive this medication.

3 months @25mg is nothing, much less bragging about your personal conquest.

You go right ahead and brag. We have so few " good " days we all feel like bragging about them. You can go longer because you no longer have pain. Prednisone is a " miracle" drug, with a whole lot of side effects. I am dowm from20 mg ( for 2 years ) to 3 for my PMR and it is real hard to get off.Without the drug , I was in a wheelchair and in terrible pain. And I am doing well now, so keep your head up high and accept each accomplishment as a gift.

I did not mean to brag. Prednisone to me has been a miracle drug. It has stopped a completely debilatating pain throughout my whole body. I know its not a cure but without it I think a trigger would have been tempting, and I know it has many bad side effects but it has helped millions since it was first prescribed. I am sorry if I offended ddeboer but I thought this forum was for all views on differant drugs, good or bad

Corticosteroids do cause muscle wasting, indeed. If you have to take prednisone for a long time then make sure that there's enough protein in your diet as well as a balanced, high-quality multi-vitamin-mineral complex. Even though it may not seem so at first, be very careful with exogenous corticosteroids as their side effects are many and far-reaching.

I'm happy to see your posting, Andy. I woke up feeling rotten on my 42nd birthday and, after a misdiagnosis for a rotator cuff injury (I had done a huge amount of shoveling a few days before so it made sense) bloodwork finally determined a month later that I had PMR. I know I'm on the extreme young end of this and am doing well so far with the prednisone (started at 40, dropped to 30 after 21 days). I'm encouraged to see you're able to exercise with some success, because I am itching to get back to the gym myself (especially since the Prednisone brought back my appetite!). Best wishes on your continued improving health!
