I'm a 45 y/o female with PCOS, T2 Diabetes, IR, and a history of infertility. Back before I knew I had PCOS, I was prescribed clomid, and was finally able to get pregnant. Anyway, after my 3 girls were born ( the last 2 were twins), I went on Nuvaring. LOVE It. I have none of the symptoms anyone else here describes. It keeps me regular, and helps me avoid perimenopause hot flashes and sweats. Once I tried experimenting with going off of the nuvaring (so that I could use supplemental progesterone cream), and I gained weight!! Like, 18 POUNDS! My periods stopped and I was a mess. My endo had me go back on the nuvaring, and I resumed normal periods, and life. But now, I am being asked to give it up again, because it was noted during a recent colposcopy (exam with a magnifying scope as part of a follow up to an abnormal pap), that I have vaginal inflammation. I was told to go off the nuvaring. Well, I didn't even know I had vaginal inflammation. Now I'm off the ring, and .... guess what? My weight is going UP again. Has anyone else experienced weight GAIN with DISCONTINUATION of their NuvaRing? It was explained to me that since I have PCOS, the nuvaring might have helped to keep my weight down as it was suppressing my excess testosterone. GADS! What to do?

I've had the same thing happen to me after going off of the OrthoEvra Patch. I was on the Patch and also taking 500mg a day of Metformin to help loose weight and get everything in 'working order' again. Now that I've been off of both for at least a year and have gained 40 lbs. So, for women with PCOS, the combo of Metformin and a form of birth control helps to keep weight down or take it off. At least that's been my experience. Even if you go off of the Ring, maybe the Patch is a good option for you if you can still find a doctor that will prescribe it. I am just about to go on the NuvaRing in a few weeks and am looking forward to loosing a few pounds! Congrats on the girls...I'll have to keep the clomid in mind when I start trying for kiddos.

I am experiencing the same thing. No change in diet and increased exercise, but I've gained about 5 pounds since I discontinued Nuvaring 2 months ago. Since I'm only 5'3", the 5 pounds makes a huge difference and I feel terrible about the way I look. I'm wanting to get pregnant within the next few months so there isn't much I can do about the weight gain except a moderate diet and continuing to exercise. I keep telling myself that the increased exercise is changing my fat to heavier muscle, but that can't explain the way I look in the mirror! I don't remember having any issues with weight gain back when I started the ring.

well, flash forward 3 months later, and I'm still carrying around about 8 extra pounds gained when I stopped nuva ring. I've done the patch but am allergic to the adhesive, so can't use that. At any rate, I was given the ok to go back on nuva ring, even if it is causing some minor inflammation. I had bloodwork done- am not pregnant, but am menopausal (I only have one ovary left). *sigh*. I was given this estrogen spray (eva-mist) but that did absolutely nothing to help my hot flashes. I would rather have a period for the rest of my life and vaginal inflammation than hot flashes and body fat gain, so I am happy to resume the use of the Nuva Ring! (PS: I too fantasized that my weight gain was due to muscle gain, but I had an electric impedence bodyfat test done at the gym, and found I'd gained a few percent body fat. No muscle- despite highly regimented and intense cardio and strength training. argh!)
