I've had a mirena implant for 5 years and it was the most painful procedure I have ever been through. I have never had a child and I have a "tight" cervix, which was probably why it was so painful. Today (4-30-09) I had a new one inserted. This time the doctor (very nice doc) numbed me with an injection into my cervix. It still hurt and I am cramping badly, but it was much easier compared to the first one. I do have migraines, but I also have epilepsy and a history of them. So, I don't know if it is the mirena or not. I just know that the doctors won't help with the migraines. They only respond to narcotics and every doc I've seen for them (regular docs and specialists) refuse to prescribe them because they think I'm an addict and I'm just looking for drugs. Sometimes I feel they are sadists who like to see lesser people suffer. I love my mirena! That's why I went back for another one. I stopped having periods and it is very effective, at least for me. I took the pill in college, gained weight and my breasts were so tender, I felt like there were shards of glass inside. On top of the side effects, my epilepsy drugs reduced their effectiveness. That's why I chose mirena in the first place. Good luck and I hope this helps. If anyone has an idea about my migraines, I would love to hear from you.
Let me just say, I have never had such problems with the pill as I have had with the Mirena. I am getting it removed tomorrow. I have headaches, I gained 25 lbs, my back hurts 24/7!! i can't sleep, i'm depressed, I'm fatigued, I HAVE ACNE!! night sweats, all of it. It is so reckless of these doctors to push this product on people and tell them it is safe.
As for migraines, stay away from nuvaring. I went from getting migraines 4 times a year to four times a week. That might sound like a gross exaggeration but I am not exaggerating in the least. I've heard the same about other hormonal BC, so stay away from it if you get migraines.
