I have been taking 40mg lipitor for over 9 years now. I have had back issues since an injury to one disc (L4?), and had microdiscectomy in 2001? Took about two years to actually get close to normal. The last few years, I have had multiple issues with shoulder pain, wrist pain, elbow pain, lower back pain, Upper rump muscle pain , and now both hips are killing me (the shoulder, upper rump muscles and hips are by far the worst). And I am now so weak in my lower back muscles, that it feels like I will (and do) pull out my back. I have seen NO many doctors I can't even name them all. I have had operations, multiple injections (cortisone) taken pain meds, etc. Nothing has helped and in the last year and a half, I have gotten steadily worse. To the point where I can't really do much of any activity. Sleeping at night is painful. Can't lie on left shoulder, and can't lie on either hip for more than a few minutes. If I fall asleep on my side, the pain wakes me up. When I try to walk, 80% of the time, I end up with a pain in my upper right rump (sacroiliac area), that I MUST sit down to get the intense pain to go away, which it does. But comes right back when I walk again. I have had x-rays, MRIs etc, and never reveals all that much. Disc issues, yes. NOt much else. Recently, I have begun to get a nasty clicking (catching) on my left jaw (joint?). Not really painful, but something definitely wrong. My dentist sent me to his Chiro. I went and liked him right away. I had gone to another chiro for years and I believe in them. But this one is the best I have seen. Anyway, one of the FIRST things he suggested, was that it was POSSIBLE that the Lipitor is causing all of my problems. Put me on COQ10, and doing multiple adjustments and treatments. I will be seeing my regular doctor 5/26, and my chiro wants me to see if he will take me off lipitor and put me on Niaspan instead. I guess my question is: Can Lipitor be fine with me for so long, and then in such a short period of time, turn me into a compete wreck from the pain and wasting away of my body/muscles? I've told doctors for over a year now that there is SOME connection as to all these issues and pain. One Doctor, of course, gave me the "you are getting old" bull. Yes, I am 56 yrs old. But I understand the process of getting old, vs the complete failing of ones body. Also, IF it is the Lipitor, can it possible all go away? Or should I expect some damage forever? One more thing, the last ortho I went to the other day for a second opinion, wants me to do a EMG, to see if there is muscle damage. I was not planning on doing it, but wonder now, should I? He was not doing it because of lipitor, as he never even talked about that to me. I had shoulder operation and have not had the results I feel I should have had.

Your Chiropractor was right . . . .this dangerous drug has caused your problems. This poison can cause MANY side effects . . . .I know, I am a victim of Lipitor . . . . I took it many years until I couldn't stand it any more and did countless hours to research and quit "cold turkey". I still have side effects after 16 mos., but, it is getting better with the natural products that I continue to take.

Unfortunately, I learned the hard way . . . . the drs. and the drug co's have a SCAM going on with the anti-cholesterol drugs . . . .it is all about $$ and we suffer. Your mind/body needs cholesterol to function. . . . .It is very sad that so many people don't know what is going on and spend time/$ to find out that Lipitor has been the problem.

By the way . . . .as you can see, any drug will cause side effects . . . better to take natural products and do alternatives. . . .Unfortunately, most drs. are drug-happy, since that's all they learned in medical school and by the drug co's.

I had all your symptoms plus went quite insane. I have not recovered from a hip replacement 2 yrs ago and like you can't lie on my left shoulder which is bad because the THR was right hand side. My life painfully shut down .I know of several people who tolerated statins for years before it went pear shaped. When you supplement with COQ10 make sure you use the ubiqinol form not the cheaper ubiqunone form it is over 300% more bio available and recomended by cardiologists. If you google spacedoc you will find great information including some remedies he recommends. Some of my symptoms actually worsened after ceasing statins before they got better, incredible sweats, hallucinations, throbbing pains etc, no different to other drug users I suppose, but it does get better. Be sure to file with the FDA. Hold on in and be patient. Best to you from New Zealand.

I AM taking the Uiquinol 100mg twice a day. Also taking a daily vit, B-Complex, Artic Cod Liver Oil, and Magnesium.

Any thoughts on replacing lipitor with Niaspan? My Chiro seems to strongly suggest that, but wants it to be my doctors decision....obviously a legal thing. I have read that when you go off of lipitor cold turkey, your cholestorol can rise quite rapidly.

Also, once I am sure of all of this, how do you file with the FDA?

I suggest that you stop taking Lipitor and not taking Niaspan . . . . .yes, when you stop taking this poison, your cholesterol will increase, but it will lower. There are many natural products to control your cholesterol, if necessary. . . . remember, your body needs cholesterol. . . .. You can complain about Lipitor from the FDA. . .www.fda.gov/medwatch . . . I did and they sent me a form letter and nothing else. . . .I doubt if the FDA will help from what I have read about the FDA/Big PHARMA connection.

If I can help, just send me a private message.

hey, before they came up with statins, doctors used to perscribe niacin for lowering cholesterol. you don't need a perscription- get some (the flushing kind) in a vitamin shop

Yo, I would check liver oil verse fish oil also go to spacedoc his research on Vit Bs and selenium. I suggest you check whether you even want to lower your cholestrol. There is the aged old saying we die from our feet up. If cholestrol causes blockages why does it only occur around the heart arterys and not at the toes where circulation becomes the weakest? At 50 + yrs old why would we expect any of our readings to be the same as a 20 yr old athlete? I firmly believe that to lower choestrol below my own body needs is dangerous. It also now seems very clear to me of all the people that croak through sudden heart attack or stroke 50% have higher cholestrol and 50% have lower cholestrol. We have a friend who has currently developed painful knees she is taking red yeast rice a natural statin (warned about on spacedoc). The medical students at Harvard are currently protesting that the information they are being given "is not as pure as it should be in such a protected enviroment" (google it) this came to a head when a student asked the professor of the adverse effects of statins. Turns out the professor was on more than one payroll. I recently discovered by accident that vinegar eased off my pins and needles and flesh pain, now makes me wonder about ph balance. I would suggest you purchased your own blood pressure meter and start taking your own readings completely at rest for your own peace of mind. Before i became "responsible" for my health I unequivocly trusted doctors now I firmly detest the bar#$%^s. You might want to subscribe to dr mercola, westorn price foundation, doctor yourself and also check bobby's profile on this web site his informative links have played a huge part in saving me. Cheers again.

Your story is very familiar to me as I have read many accounts of lipitor side effects like yours. I have eight years of monitoring side effects with statin drugs.

Niaspan has a very high drop out rate due to intolerance of side effects. Some people can take Niaspan, but be forewarned that the flushing and itching can be unbearable for some. Niaspan is the drug that torched my muscles and is to this day my biggest regret.

An increase in cholesterol may be the thing your body needs most right now. LDL carries cholesterol from the liver to all your tissues so cholesterol can make repairs to existing cells, and help build new healthy cells. Cholesterol is the building blocks to healthy cells, nerves, and steroid hormones.
