Hi everyone, I read some of the posts here and thought to share my experience with you. About 15 years ago I started having heart burns and started taking Tums, Gaviscon and some other antacids and they seemed to work for a little while. But my heart burn slowly got worst and worst until I went to my family doctor. He sent me to a specialist and after sending the scope in my stomach (EsophagoGastroDuodenal (EGD) endoscopy), he said that I have H. Pylori infection in my stomach, as well as LES malfunction (LES = Lower Esophageal Sphincter). He prescribed some antibiotics and 20mg/day of Losec for 8 weeks. After 8 weeks I ran out of Losec, and my heart burn returned again. I went and saw my doctor again and he said I can continue taking Losec and that I can take it as long as I need it and that Losec has been in the market for over 19 years and no one had any side effect from it and it's one of the safest drugs that they have come up with. So I kept on taking it regularly 20 mg/day for 15 years now. Until about 6 months ago I switched to Omeprazole because my insurance company wouldn't cover the cost for Losec but covered the generic brand Omeprazole. I've had none of the side effects mentioned here, BUT PLEASE READ THE REST OF THIS. Losec is also called Prilosec and Omeprazole is a generic brand with the same active ingredient but different fillers. About 2 months ago, I went to a Nature's Source store (here in Canada) and was looking around. An employee of the store offered his help to me and I told him about my case. He said you have totally shot down your digestive system and told me to go and see a Naturopathic Doctor. I found one and went and saw him. His recommendations were: have 2 tablespoons of an Organic Apple Cider Vinegar (I use Bragg brand) 10 minutes prior to each meal. Also gave me some Probiotics pills as well as some Digestive Enzymes pills. Prior to this, if I missed taking Losec in the morning, I suffered a great discomfort in my stomach with heart burn (a lot!). I followed the naturopathic doctor's advice and did what he told me. After about 1 month, today is the second day that I haven't taken Losec. I haven't had discomfort in my stomach yet. I'll have to see how long I can go without it. I will post and update this again. BUT PLEASE READ ON! Losec, Prilosec, Ranitidine, Omeprazole, Nexxium (the purple pill), and all of this family of drugs are Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPI). Which means, they stop the production of the stomach acid. Therefore, no acid reflux or heart burn.... But when there is no acid in the stomach, the stomach becomes the biggest target organ and a paradise for bacteriums, microbes and other microorganisms, which otherwise can not survive in it's very high acidic environment (H. Pylori is an exception). We can not digest our food properly any more. Our bodies suffer from lack of Calcium (regardless of the amount and type of calcium intake), because it can not be processed any more. Meat can not be digested properly any more. Therefore, lack of Amino Acids which are the building blocks in our bodies. Guess what, NO AMINO ACIDS = JOINT PAIN WHICH LEADS TO ARTHRITIS. And lots of other problems later in life. NO SIDE EFFECT, MY A*S. If you're suffering from heart burns, indigestion, reflux, or GERD, stop eating: ANYTHING THAT HAS WHEAT IN IT, TOMATOES OR ANYTHING MADE FROM IT (i.e. ketchup, tomato sauce/paste...), DAIRY FOOD, COFFEE/TEA, ALCOHOL. NO CHEWING GUMS, SUGAR, CHOCOLATE, FRIED/OILY FOOD, STARCHY FOOD. STOP SMOKING AS SOON AS YOU CAN. These are all irritants to the stomach and esophagus. I'm still educating myself about this. I read this book about stomach acid called: Why Stomach Acid Is Good For You by Jonathan V. Wright, Lane Lenard. Read it and you will be surprised. I hope this will help some of you. God bless. S. This is an update on my original post.
Hi gabyr, I'm terribly sorry about this very late respond to your question.
Please forgive me.
Anyhow, I had been taking Losec for over 15 years. I haven't taken it since May 23rd (almost 4 months) which by the way if I missed it one day, by about 9:30 in the morning I felt a horrible heartburn and stomach pain. The only times I had some stomach flare-ups, was when I had some onions and another time with sweet potato. Other than that I have been feeling great knowing I'm not on Losec any more and almost eating normal now.
What I've been doing is: First thing in the morning when I wake up, I juice half a lemon and add a little (filtered) water to it and take my probiotics capsule (Brand: Genestra Brands-Product name: HMF Forte) with it. About 10 minutes later, I drink a mouthful (about 3 tablespoons) of Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar (I think any Organic Raw Unfiltered apple cider with the mother will do) followed by a couple of sips of water to wash the acid off the teeth. 10 minutes later I drink this power shake made from: blending in a blender, one and a half scoops of MediClear powder manufactured by Thorne Research Inc., mixed with one cup soy milk, one cup water, (half an apple -or- 1/3 banana -or- one cup of berries (any type of berries, but blueberries have more stuff that is very healthy for us)), one teaspoon organic flax seed powder and one tablespoon of (extra virgin olive oil -or- hemp oil -or- flax seed oil).
While I'm drinking this shake (for breakfast), I have one teaspoon high quality fish oil, one vitamin D tablet (1000 IU), and one Digestive Plus pill made by Genestra Brands. During the day I drink about 4-5 mugs of warm water sweetened with SweetLeaf Stevia, as well as about 2 liters of water (filtered not bottled and definitely! not straight from the tap). My lunch and dinner for the first 2-3 months were chicken breast or salmon cooked in water, no salt, with a lot of vegetable either steamed or raw. 2-3 fruits. Of course a mouthful of that apple cider vinegar 10 minutes before each meal. And one of those Digestive Plus pills with each meal.
No sugar, fatty food, junk food, chocolate, dairy products, tomato or any tomato products (i.e. paste, sauce, ketchup), onions, wheat products (i.e. bread, pasta, cake and pastries), white rice, starchy food, corn, popcorn, dried fruit, Alcoholic beverages, caffeine (coffee, tea), orange or orange juice.
Now the only thing I've changed after about 3 months of this program is, I eat any type of food (with as least fat and sugar as possible). I introduced tomato and its products, sugar, and onions slowly and carefully to my stomach again, with no problems so far. The rest of the routine have stayed the same.
The lemon wakes up the acid producing cells in the stomach, as well as alkalizing the body, even though it's acidic at first. Vinegar helps increasing the acid production of the stomach which in turn helps the digestion in the stomach a lot, as well as alkalizing the body. SweetLeaf Stevia alkalizes the body too.
Our bodies when alkalized, kills off the cancerous cells which we all have and are actually born with them. They can not live in an alkalized environment, but they live happily in an acidic environment which sugary stuff causes.
Probiotics in conjunction with vitamin D, boost the body's immune system which can fight many diseases and viruses including flues (including the so much hyped Swine Flu, which our governments do not want people to know, because of the revenue they are making off of the Big Pharma for all the drugs and vaccines they are pushing).
CAUTION: More than 2000 IU of vitamin D per day will make you lose your hair. So if you are taking any other source of vitamin D, DO NOT EXCEED 2000 IU PER DAY.
Fish oil NOT COD LIVER OIL (high quality which you can get from any natural nutrition stores) helps reducing inflammation in the body and is good for our memory and brains.
CAUTION: Cod Liver Oil has a lot of vitamin D, which is not good if you take vitamin D tablets.
Digestive Plus pills contain HCL (Hydrochloric Acid) and digestive enzymes which helps with the digestion in the stomach.
MediClear powder blended with those other ingredients I mentioned above, help with the healing process of the stomach.
Probiotics pills also help with the digestion of the stomach contents once entered in the intestines, as well as reduce any bloating problems. They also replenish the good bacteria in our intestines (especially if you’ve been taking any antibiotics) and take a big load off of our immune system, which in turn boosts our immune system amazingly. I used to get chest infections at least once every two months which I had to get some antibiotics for 10 to 14 days to clear it, I did get 3 chest infections because of colds and flues and they all were cleared up on the 2nd or the 3rd day without any antibiotics! Haven't had a single headache (I used to get at least 2 per week) ever since I started taking probiotics capsules.
I take another probiotics capsule at bed time (both times, morning and bedtime on an empty stomach). Empty stomach is considered 1 hour before meal, or 2 hours after meal.
This is all I’ve done so far. And I have been off Losec for almost 4 months now. No heartburns now, even eating onions! Red onions don’t irritate the stomach. While white onions on the other hands do irritate it and even can cause heartburn in a perfectly healthy stomach.
I’ve lost over 20 pounds and have gained muscle mass.
Forgot to mention, everyday when I got home from work, I jumped on my elliptical machine for about one hour and did some moderate weight lifting for about 45-60 minutes. I rested on the weekends though.
I hope I haven’t missed anything. If I remember anything else I’ve been doing during this time, I’ll post it here.
I hope this will help you or anyone with the same problems I used to have.
Helpful information here if you have H. Pylori infection.
