I believe that my friable cervix is from the hormones so close to my cervix that are constantly being released from my NuvaRing. All tests for STDs and abnormalities came back clear. Other than that, I do not have any noticeable side effects.

What is a friable cervix?

It is when the cervix is red and VERY sensitive. With any touch of it (by way of sex) it bleeds. Not profusely, but I spot for a couple hours.

I got a pap done when my doc told me I had it and I should go get further STD tests. Both my pap and my tests came back clean. It has to be the hormones.

Thank you for posting! I am experiencing the same thing! My fiance and I are clean of STDs and when I removed the nuva ring (mostly due to discomfort ie. burning, itching and hurting during sex). That is when the bleeding during sex began. I ignored it for a few months, in mid-march I did some research online (the only thing that came up was cervical cancer), freaked out and went in for a pap (i had not been for one in 2 years), I bled alot during the test. My results came back INCONCLUSIVE and I've had to wait 3 months to allow the cells to grow back before going for another pap test which is scheduled for June 9. The wait has been terrifying...

Can I ask you a couple more questions?
- How long has the bleeding been happening to you?
- Did it continue after discontinuation of the nuva ring?

Thanks :)

Hi ratherbeinvegas...

I have not discontinued the ring. I might need to, but I do not have further complications and still need to consult my doc. I cannot specifically remember a time that the bleeding began but I had always that thought sex may have been rough that that I had a little scratch or something. The bleeding is light and minimal. I never have pain and never had on or off the Ring. However, my pap procedure had me bleeding for a good day or two and very heavy. She mentioned that the "swipe" of the cervix caused it. And of course, the swipe was super uncomfortable.

I have been on the ring since january and cannot remember if I bled before then or not. I got my pap done and then the STD tests to look for chlamedia and I am clean of HPV and any other STDs. It is simply a hormonal change that my cells do not like.

I am sure if I continue with the Ring it can cause further problems and maybe even ruin my cervix. But I have always wanted to adopt :).

I started the nuva ring and i experienced the same symptoms i took it out because it was uncomfortable, and i notice bumps on the opening of my cervix, and slight bleeding. I went for my papsmear never had anything wrong before and never had an STD and neither has my husband and my papsmear just came back abnormal. So I set up an appt for a coloscpy your stories have eased my mind a little bit i not freaking out that i have cancer or an std as much
