My 4 year old Son has had diarrhea from about the last 4 weeks... we have started some tests for Celiac disease but today it only occurred to me today that he has been on Singulair for about that time frame... after all the worry and reading these other storied Im even more convinced that it maybe the Singulair.. Im just hoping that someone might read this sometime today or the next couple of days to tell me if when they come off the singulair how long did it take for the diarrhea to pass. My son had is last tablet 2 nights ago ( so he has only been off it so far for one night. But he still has the diarrhea.. should it have started to come out of his system already.

Glad to hear you made the connection to Singulair and I hope your little guy recovers quickly. About 20 hours after a dose of Singulair, blood levels are zero. This information is from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

It is currently unknown how long it takes for symptoms of an adverse reaction to Singulair to completely resolve. To my knowledge, this is not being studied by the FDA or the NIH. However, Parents United for Pharmaceutical Safety and Accountability is collecting information from parents about their children's experiences in an effort to determine a "recovery timeframe." You can read "recovery stories" parents have posted on our site: www.parentsforsafety.org.

Some parents have reported that their children showed improvement within days after stopping Singulair. Parents also reported that it took anywhere from days to months to become symptom free. These reports include both physical and neuropsychiatric side effects. I hope you find the information we have on our site helpful.

My 16 month old has the exact same problem. The diarrhea started the morning after he started taking singulair. I was hoping his system would just get used to it because the singulair was really working well, but after 2 weeks of constant diarrhea- having to wash his bedding EVERY morning- I figured it was time to switch meds. He has been off Singulair for 4 days now and he is still having the diarrhea. He is being tested for Celiac and roto virus, but I have yet to hear back from the doctors on the lab results. I am looking for answers too. I was wondering how long it should take for the singulair to stop causing diarrhea if that is what is causing it.

Hi Mimipants, we just had all the tests done and they all come back normal.. Celiac, iron, full blood lots and lots of tests and all normal.. Please dont start to worry yet because My sons didnt stop until close to a week after.. It was definatly the singular. Im so happy we are off it. Try giving lots of yogart and maybe probiotic to build the system up again.. I must admit I was sure it was celiac disease after his poo didnt get any better after a few days but one morning soon after all did go back to normal.. Hope all goes well for you.. Try not to worry if things have only changed since the singular Im sure thats what would be the problem.. Might just add that the only test that didnt come back normal was a stool test for food break down but that was (in other words conferming that he had diahree).. but all normal now.

Well its been over a week now since he has been off of singulair and it is still happening every morning. all of his labs came back normal too, although I haven't heard back about rotovirus but I am pretty sure that isn't the case because neither my daughter nor I have gotten sick at all. I was so relieved to hear it wasn't celiac but now I just don't know what it is. he is going to have to see a GI specialist which is over two hours away from our home. I still keep hoping each morning there won't be a mess to clean up. Did your child start a different medicine when taken off singulair? My son was put right on Zyrtec which isn't as effective with his coughing but it still is helping some. I was just beggining to wonder if that may give him the same reaction?? Anyway I'm glad to hear things are back to normal for you and I am feeling a little more hopeful again.

Im So sorry things havnt got any better. The doctor told us that most of the other asthma preventers work in the same way.. and if he is having a side affect to singular he would most likely to other types of oral medication. we changed over to the flixotide it is a spray like the ventalin and is used twice a day, every day. It isnt as affective but there has been no side affects it takes 3 to 7 days to be fully affective. Maybe you could ask your doctor to try this one just so that you can see if its the singular of zyrtec causing the problems. My son also had really runny poos from Predmix (for ashtma when out of control) and he had the runns for about a month, to the point he had blood in them I ran him to hospital and they said he had rotovirus as well and then they run some test and sent us home, 2 weeks later there tests come back negative. Months later we used the predmix again and the day after we stopped using it the diahrree started again for another 4 weeks. about a month later we put him on the singular and it started agian but only for about a week. My sons seems to be with anything that works like a de mucas, the doctor told us that maybe there was blood and he was getting diaree because the bowl has alot of mucus around the lining and when using the predmix and singular it was acually removing the mucus from the linning of his bowl and the blood was because the mucas was gone and the modulals were bleeding ( she said to us like a lawn mower taking the tops of them). Because the mucas has alot to do with the break down process she thought this was causing the diaree. Oh well what ever it was it has all stopped... Im sorry for my spelling . Im just a normal mum like you that has gone though the ropes trying to sort my son out all I can tell you is our personal experience. My personal thoughts is it would be the zyrtec if you changed over straight after singular.. It maybe worth trying the Flixotide just so you can eliminte them. Also we had allergy testing to see if my son had an intollerence. Feel free to chat anytime you like I would be love to see how yous are getting on, and I really feel for you with the stress and worry you must feel. But also sooo happy it wasnt celiac disease. Keep in touch. Are you on facebook? might be easier to post on there. I hope you get some answers soon.

I had it in my head but was just interested for myself is zyrtec used for asthma? I had it in my head it was a antihistemene? Is it used for a asthma preventer as well.. We use polarime to keep alleries under control (antihisteme) and the flixotide to prevent asthma and ventolin for when he already has asthma. I just want also to say again that when my docor said after all my sons mucas was removed from the singular and prednisone (predmix) the best way to put the mucus back was yogart, yacult for antibiodies and if we could get probiotics (we got in powder form) It took a while before we seen any results.

Not saying at all that your childs could be in any waythe same as mine, but maybe just try to help with other options, or maybe just share our experience to see if yours is in anyway like ours. Doctor these days seem to think that just because its rare it wont happen. As I seen by this site, bad side affects are not as rare as my doctor told us, and I was very relieved to read other parents having the exact same sort of things happening to them.
