I received Lupron injections for 9 months to releive symptoms of endometriosis. It did stop the pain and all other symptoms I was having, however, I gained 45 pounds in that 9 month span. I had never weighed over 110 lbs in my life and my doctor actually had the nerve to tell me I was "lucky" because most women gain an average of 60 lbs! Lucky was the LAST word I would use to describe what I was feeling. Mortified is the word I would use! I als ended up havin a complete abdominal hysterectomy 2 yrs later as all symptoms returned shortly after stopping the injections.
Inbinion-
I would suggest really thinking about taking this medicine. My doctor suggested that I take the Lupron for 6 months (the recommended max for this medicine) I was very hesitant as he told me of all the side effects. So far I have had just about every side effect but they seem to come and go. It is not a consistent thing. I have had headaches, joint pain, mood swings, hot flashes, increased anxiety, slight weight gain (10 lbs), no sex drive, dizziness, insomnia, and feeling extra tired. Like I said all of them seem to come and go. However, I dont think I ever feel like myself. I have 1 more month left and lately I have been having pain in my ovaries. My doctor seems to think it is nothing and he did an ultrasound and didn't see anything but I am still worried that the Lupron didnt do its job. I think everyone reacts differrently and the severity of the side effects differs as well. Not sure if your doctor told you but there is an Add-back therapy that helps reduce the side effects if they are completely unbearable, however it does reduce the effects of the Lupron as well. I wish you luck.
I'm 16 and have already had a laperoscopoly. My right tube is completely blocked with endometreosis and my left tube is almost completely blocked, if i don't get it treated I won't be able to have children. I got my depo lupron shot a couple weeks ago and the worst thats happened was i got a dead leg because the nurse put it in in a bad spot. I haven't had night sweats or hot flashes. I have had a little bit of cramping but its nothing compared to what I was going through. so my advice would be to take it and try not to worry cuz stress doesn't help
Ask your doctor about receiving Norethendrone. You can take that daily along with the Lupron injection and it is supposed to lessen the chances of having the side effects. I am on my second trial of Lupron and so far the side effects are completely different then when I was on the injection a year ago. Last time I had mood swings, night sweats, and hot flashes along with insomnia but on the plus my sex drive was through the roof. This time I have experienced (and its only been 3 weeks since my last injection) vaginal dryness, moodiness, cramping, and break through bleeding. I also think I have gained about 4 lbs. I am scheduled to have another injection in September and I dunno if I am going to follow through. My other option is pregnancy...I am getting married in December so I might decide to get pregnant after that.
Steer clear of this drug, Lupron. I was given four huge injections between 1994 and 1997. It made me so manic that, right after a hysterectomy (post no pregnancy ever), my husband deemed me "nuts", and left, eventually remarrying and having a child with his new wife. (Well, she was pregnant and he did the "honorable" thing and married her. Oh well. You make your bed, you lay in it.
But as for Lupron. Avoid it like the plague.
I have eno also and I was on lupron for 9 months way past the recommended amount of time, but because it helped me greatly with the pain and also I found it helped with the hormone issues, moods, etc.. My doc and I agreed to keep me on it without any serious long term effects. I loved it! I would still be on it today if my insurance kept covering it, it is exspensive around $800 per shot every month without insurance. I am not wanting children so I dont know the effects or results of it for that side of things. My opinion I lived it and will get back on it when my new insurance covers it. Hope this helps.
I was diagnosed about 5 yrs ago with Endometreosis and started on Lupron injections once every month for 6 months. I did very well on this and actually ended up pregnant after the 2nd or 3rd month after finishing the treatment. I did not have any wt gain or side affects. I had occasional cramping, but not like the horrible pain I was going through before the injections. I since then was put on loestrin pills after my 3rd child and it was working pretty well, for 2 yrs. up until the last few months. I am now 33 yrs old and am thinking about having a hysterectomy. I am in the process of trying to find further treatment or surgery to end this battle. Good luck
I was on Lupron on 2 different occasions for 6 months each. I also took a very expensive drug called femara for 3 months, which has similar effects as Lupron supposedly, but I couldn't afford it in the end. I had one of the worst times of my life during the time I was on Lupron. I was tired all of the time, had headaches non-stop, I was "foggy" and moody, my extremities would tingle, I had so much anxiety that I would blush if someone so much as looked at me for a few seconds (literally), I ended up trying to commit suicide from the massive depression I felt, and then there was the 40 lb weight gain that I have never been able to get rid of since I stopped taking the drug. I was thin all of my life prior to that. What was meant to be a treatment for me ended up tearing my life apart, and I will never, never take this drug again. In the end, it never even helped me either. There was a study done on an anti-inflammatory supplement called pycnogenol that was promising for lessening the pain of endometriosis. I took it for quite a while after my second surgery, and I only have pain during my periods now, when it had previously been a daily pain. It may be an alternative to those willing to try it. It can be bought at GNC, Vitamin Shoppe, and stores like that.
In April 2008 I started the Lupron shots for six months. Except for the weight gain, about 25 pounds, and hot flashes, I thought they were wonderful. Until I stopped getting them. I ended up in the hospital two months later in worse pain than I had ever had and had to have a third surgery for my endometriosis. Now I am simply on the three month depo shots. I still have a little discomfort, but without the side effects and I am finally slowly starting to lose the weight I gained. I suffered with endo for several years, after my pregnancy and nursing, it subsided for nearly four years. My doctor told me pregnancy is one of the most effective ways to get rid of it, at least for awhile.
I can tell you that I take the 1ml injections of Lupron daily. I am taking the injections for other reasons, but the drug is not as bad as it sounds. I do have emotional days but you have to understand that you are manipulating your body and hormones and that is to be expected. The physical symptons are not that bad for me. I had headaches for a while but they're gone and the weight gain is a bit of a pain. However, I feel that I can only blame the med for so long. Then I have to look at my daily activity level and caloric intake. Everything is relative. I've been on the shots for 5 weeks and have about 3 or 4 more weeks to go. Please keep in mind though that I'm on a very low dosage of the medication.
I am on my second round of Lupron/Aygestin. I did the first series in 2004 (after a laparatomy) for 9 months and LOVED IT - no negative side effects - I was truly a different and happier person! I am on my second round (2009) and have gained about 15 lbs in 3 months but other than that I am completely happy with it. (I don't remember gaining weight on the first round.) I am still a much happier and more content person when I am on Lupron/Aygestin. I am 39, never married, and no children. I was hoping to hold out on a hysterectomy just in case I did have the opportunity to be married and have children - that is why I am doing a second round. Will probably do a laprascopy next year and then have a hysterectomy sometime in the next 5 years.
I just had my second Lupron shot a few days ago. I must be in the minority, but I've had very few problems with it so far. I had some mood swings and hot flashes at first, but my doc put me on a supplement and then I was fine. My sex drive has been insatiable! Hubby loves that.
My only problem was that my first three month shot wore off after a couple of months, and the pain came back. If that happens on this cycle, I'll be very disappointed. We don't want kids, so might do a hysterectomy next. Still talking it through with my doc and waiting.
