I had the exact same situation, except I've only been taking it for three months, not three years. I'm only 23, and for the past month and a half to two months, I've had serious problems with word choice and sentence completion. This is saying a lot considering I'm a freelance writer and copy editor. I constantly forget what I'm about to say or things I told myself to remember less than a minute before. Like you, I started writing everything down because it was impossible for me to remember it. I just came across posts like yours yesterday. I had absolutely NO idea that my thought processing problems could be a side effect of lamictal; I thought something was seriously wrong with me. I told my psychiatrist today about it. She didn't believe me. She said that she hadn't heard of such a side effect, that it was probably something really rare and that I should stay on the medication. Today's appointment with her was my last, and I'm no longer taking the drug. It did help stabilize my mood, but I'll try to find another medication that stabilizes my mood without making me feel like I developed an early case of Alzheimer's.
Did you have any side effects in the beginning? What is your current dosage? My 18 years old son is on 600 mg a day. 200 mg every 8 hours. He is experienced short term memory loss and about once every two weeks has an episode where he is on auto pilot. He appears fine, but doesn't remember what he just said or did 5 minutes before. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
