My husband has pulmonary fibrosis and has been on prednisone since June 2008. It worked wonders for him and he was able to function normally; he started at 60 mg. He has slowly been coming down off the prednisone and is currently taking 1 mg. Since he got down below 20mg he has been losing energy and ambition and interest; he is terribly weak and any little exertion has him gasping for air; his legs are so weak he can hardly walk and only for a short time. He does not sleep during the day but does not sleep much at night either. We know these effects are the result of coming off the prednisone but I'm wondering how long the effects will last.

I am not a medical professional but have taken Prednisone for 15 years and have done much research on the subject. I have read that less than 3 mg of Prednisone daily is probably clinically insignificant, so at a dose of 1 mg your husband may have no help at all from the medication. If the intent of reducing his dosage was to discontinue Prednisone, that has likely been achieved but if finding the lowest dose that still helps him is the intent, it sounds like a higher dose is needed. I believe common maintainance doses of Prednisone are in the 5-15 mg per day range. Please contact his doctor soon, your husband's symptoms certainly sound significant for anyone with lung disease. Wishing you the best of luck.
