Hi, Bec, mother of 18 month old. I gave birth to my beautiful little boy on the 21st Jan 2008 via cesarean section after a long four day labour as the result of induction due to high blood pressure. In April of 2008, I had my first IUD, being the Mirena inserted. Several months after having the Mirena inserted, I had experience heightened anxiety, more intense headaches than normal, painful cramping, extended periods that were far more heavy than I had ever experienced, I was tired all of the time, I had gained an enormous amount of weight and my hair was thinning like crazy. Late 2008 / or Early 2009 (I apologise for the vague nature of this post, unfortunately, another side effect I have encountered is problems remembering the most basic of things, or being vague ALL THE TIME!!) Anyways, 08/09 I was at work, I was sitting at my desk, I bent forward on my chair to tie my show lace and all of a sudden I felt a sharp stabbing pain in my right side / back, it was a pulled muscle, I could hardly breath and the pain was unbearable. I went to the Emergency department, they hooked me up to goodness knows how many monitors etc. at which point the doctor started asking me all kinds of questions, and he quickly turned his attentions to my ridiculously fast pulse and sky high blood pressure. I was given pain killers and a blood test then sent home.
A short time later (maybe one to three days later) I received a call from my GP who informed me I had Graves' disease with TSH levels unlike any he had seen to date. (also know as Hyperthyroidism, where the thyroid expels high levels of hormone making you feel crazy!! lol) Around three months ago I was treated with Radioactive Iodine to shrink the thyroid and it seems to be working.
So, if I hadn't pulled my muscle it would have been untreated. I feel that the majority of my Graves' symptoms started during my pregnancy rather than after Mirena was inserted. However, Mirena has been nothing but a pain in the you know what!!
I am a long time psoriasis sufferer, though after the insertion, it went wild, spreading like wild fire I should day, I also have eczema / psoriasis developing on my palms and stomach. It would be great to be told of these side effects PRIOR to your doctor assuring you that this is the most wonderful terrific product on the market!!
Hi Eva, my name is Lavern and I've been on mirena since March 2006 since no other birth control worked for me. I have a 4 year old daughter. I have all the symptoms you list and more. I was also diagnosed with SLE (lupus) in May 2008 which is very simular to Graves Desease. All of my symptoms started happening around June of 2007. I never thought it could of been the Mirena until i started doing some major research. I am scheduled to have it removed on Aug 13. I do believe that i don't have lupus and that these symptoms are all from having mirena. I've been through so much in the past 2 years and is hoping that the mirena is my problem and not Lupus. If I don't have lupus that means my life can go back to normal. I can enjoy the sun without suffering from sever sun burn, hair loss, weight gain, back pain, muscle tension in my neck and shoulders. I do believe that removing this evil device is the answer to my problems. If you would like to talk please email me at akiradez@yahoo.com
