DON'T cut your pill in half unless you have the regular (not SR or XL) - it will release all the medication quickly. The first few weeks after I started Wellbutrin, I felt strange also, but that quickly abated. I have been on Wellbutrin for almost 10 years off and on. Initially, I was started on SSRI meds back in the early 90's and went through several different types. After a few month on Zoloft, it sometimes jazzed me up (I had to adjust the dose daily) Paxil put me to sleep (almost drove off the road several times) They all affected my sex drive. Wellbutrin increased it (my husband experienced problems with SSRI's and has the opposite for Wellbutrin)
I finally got tired of being a guinea pig (Family Practice doesn't have the expertise) and went to a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. - I was diagnosed with Bipolar II instead of just depression. She tried me on Celexa and then Effexor. Coming off of the Effexor was a HORRIBLE experience; I even tapered the dose. I had just lost my job, and the ARNP would not let me switch back to Wellbutrin. Instead I was just kept on Lamictal (the mood stabilizer for Bipolar II). It was Hell. I finally went to her and begged to be put back on Wellbutrin. Within 2 weeks I was feeling much better. I will NEVER go on an SSRI or SNRI again after that experience. I experience an increase in the ability to focus, and once I was adjusted to the first few weeks, I didn't have any memory problems. I'd suggest that you go and see a specialist (either a Psychiatrist or a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner) to ensure you have the correct diagnosis. Good luck, and let me know what you think.
this is a late response and i hope you have resolved the clinical issues. however, if not, please note that if you are taking the generic version of wellbutrin, there have been reported significant side effects. see http://www.peoplespharmacy.com/2007/04/23/side-effects-of/ for a long list of patients who have been experiencing these effects. although the FDA, "academic" researchers, all claim it's in the head of the patients, clearly the effects are much more widespread than these non-patients seem to believe. have your doctor note each and every version and dose of the drug you have tried to see what works for you. anything from the active ingredient of the drug to the 'excipients' can impact patients differently. and always, always, always insist to your doctor that you need something different if the drug form you are taking is not working!
First of all, do not cut your pills in half. The coating of the pill is what slowly releases the medicine. If you cut it in half you will have more and different side effects then you won't know what the hell is going on. Second, If you want to get rid of these side effects I suggest you spend the money for the brand name Wellbutrin. The generic form of Wellbutrin is the worst thing you can take. It is completely different from the real one. Just do a little research and you will be amazed. Good luck.
