I had the Mirena inserted at 42...had it for a grand total of 5 months and wow, did it wreak havoc on my body! Like you, I got dizziness, nausea, brain fog, total inability to concentrate, cystic acne (never had ANY acne before, much less this kind)....plus a whole host of other scary side effects. Had the Mirena removed and no period...2nd month, no period....3rd month, no period...then the hot flashes started....early menopause at 43. Shocking! After almost a year, I would think that your body has adjusted all it probably will. I wish you luck in making your decision....if you didn't have these issues prior to Mirena, then it's the Mirena causing them.
Hi Libby
I just wanted to let you know that I am 44 years old with two boys coming up 11 and 9. I had been on some sort of birth control since I was 14 to regulate and reduce heavy periods and pain. A couple of years ago, I asked for something to ease the unusually heavier periods I was experiencing (I guess due to age). I pretty much had a bad experience with Mirena insertion, the crampings felt worse than labour pains and lasted about a week after. It settled down and in the first three months, I thought the Mirena IUD was the best thing since sliced bread!! Things started going downhill in about the fourth month. Although I spotted, I never got a heavy period from the first month so that was a blessing. I have experienced pretty much the same as other ladies have said, my biggest concern was the hair loss by the droves, acne, weight gain (I've been 60 kilos since a teenager, I am now hitting 70 kilos), hypertension (that had my doctor sending me to a cardiologist for), anxiety attacks, breathlessness, HUGE mood swings (Im surprised Im not divorced yet!), swelling in my legs, backpain.
I went to my doctor a couple of months ago and was basically told it was all my mind. It's my body and only I know when something isn't right. And I knew something wasn't right with this. I was always a healthy person and this came from the left field. Yesterday after 2 1/2 years of having the Mirena in, I finally stood my ground and got it out. Without saying anything negative about the Mirena IUD, my doctor said there are women who are sensitive to the hormones and having a foreign body in their uterus. I believe I was stressing myself out so much over having this foreign thing in me. I walked away from the doctors office yesterday feeling 10 times lighter and free. I'm not sure what I am in for in the way of side effects going forward, hopefully not as bad as what I have had.
To anyone who is having problems with the Mirena, listen to yourself and to your body because you know if the Mirena is causing you problems. Don't let anyone tell you it's all your mind because it's not.
To the women who have successfully used Mirena, you are blessed.
