Hello everyone. I am a 40 year old female and have been on Toprol XL 50 mg. for about 6 years now. In the beginning I was taking Toprol, then because my prescription plan wanted to switch I am on Metoprolol. I was prescribed this after a stress test because my heart rate did not go down as quickly as the cardiologist wanted it. If only I knew what I did now, I would never have started it. HELLO!! I weighed 200 lbs. at the time and was a couch potato. What did he expect? Of course my heart rate wasn't going to go down being so out of shape. I am so angry that I was prescribed this drug for such a stupid reason. I am also on meds to lower my blood sugar and high blood pressure. I know that all of my problems are due to my weight and so I've made a decision to seriously change my diet so I can get off of all of this crap. I currently weigh 217 lbs. But as you all know, being on Toprol, it's so hard to lose weight. I want off of this crap as soon as possible. Can any one of you guys who has gotten themselves off of this medication please send me some information as to how you got off of Toprol XL? My doctor is a real moron who works solely for pharmaceutical companies so I refuse to go to him. I will be changing doctors soon.

Good that you will change drs. soon., also, that you realize that most drs. are drug-happy. I have weaned off , did " cold-turkey" to rid the drugs from my system. I only take natural products/alternatives now.

I have been on Toprol for about 3 months now. I'm now tapering down and it's horrible. What side effects do you have?

Ihad open heart surgery and have been on Metropolol for over 4 months and I am nervous with anxiety all the time and do not sleep. My BP doesn't go above 100/60 and stay light headed but the doctor will not let me get off it.

smokymountains . . . .you say that your dr. "will not let me get off it" . . you are the patient . . sounds like your dr. controls you. if you are afraid from you dr . .then I suggest that you find another dr. . . , there are many natural products to help high blood pressure . . .instead of taking drugs.

i am a 44 year old female who has been on beta blockers for years now...since my late 20's. As soon as I started the beta blockers my weight spiked and hasn't stopped. on at the end of august i was weighing in at 214. i am only 5' tall so that's a lot of weight for me. i have been trying to lose weight forever and not been sucessful. i am on an antiarrithimic drug as well. i saw the alli commercial and asked my primary doc if i could take it and he said yes. so i did and... i asked the cardiologist if it could be my toprol xl that is making it harder for me to lose weight and he said yes. i asked him if i could cut the dose in half and he agreed. i went out and bought the alli...love all the nutritional information...have strictly followed the diet plan (you HAVE TO CHANGE YOUR EATING HABITS) and have lost 19 lbs and it hasn't even been two months yet. I also diligently started exercising...30 minutes on the exercise bike while watching my favorite shows or listening to music (helps the time pass and keeps you distracted) and also weights. It was hard at first and now i think i am an exercise junky. once you get past the hard part of feeling sore at first, it's a breeze and invigorating. i wish i would have done this along time ago. tip: weight watchers frozen entrees are great for lunch. keeps you away from the fast food restaurants. i love food and i love to cook. i am cooking healthier now, but i am not missing on flavor...using a lot of fresh herbs and looking up health receipes and following them...oh! the key is also to look at all the label and count calories and fat gram. i found it annoying at first, but now i am hooked! you can lose weight. if i can do it anyone can, but you have to have determination and not give up. ...if you decide to try alli you have to watch your fat intake to you will have side effects (extra trips to the bathroom)...it only has happened twice to me so far, but i am counting those fat grams so i have been fine since and no more problems. i feel so much better and so can you. ...and your meds...they are serious stuff and you really need to talk to a doctor or pharmacist for guidance as to how to reduce your dosage or stop it. don't do it on your own. it is not safe from what i hear. good luck!
