according to wikipedia levaquin "is a synthetic chemotherapeutic agent used to treat severe or life-threatening bacterial infections"
is a sinus infection life-threatening? if you read these posts, you'll see people being prescribed levaquin for things like UTI, sinus infections, bronchitis- things that could be treated with safer, gentler antibiotics
first of all, a lot of the need for stronger and stronger antibiotics can be blamed on the agribusiness industry- if they didn't keep animals in such tight confinement and feed them such unnatural diets, they wouldn't have to use roughly 70% of all antibiotics produced to keep these animals from getting sick (which they wouldn't need if they were outside grazing in grass).
this overuse of antibiotics creates suberbugs and diminishes the use of common antibiotics, leading to a dangerous gap in the medical profession's ability to treat things like staff infections, etc. big pharma is happy to jump in and create 2nd and 3rd generation antibiotics which are tougher on bacteria but also tougher on us
ok, the second issue- sinus infections. a doctor once told me that there aren't all that many blood vessels running into the sinuses so it takes a lot of systemic antibiotics running through your entire system to get a small amount into your nose. he wondered if using a topical antibiotic (a drop of an antibacterial mouth wash in a neti pot, for example) might not be more effective and less stressful to your system
the third issue- was your sinus infection bacterial, viral or fungal? no one ever really knows because no one ever cultures or tests for it. i've brought sputum in a jar to the doctor and suggested that he send it to a lab to be tested, so we'd know what we were up against, and he refused. no, it's easier to write a script for an antibiotic, even if it won't do a damn thing for the problem, because the problem might not be bacterial at all! in which case, all he is doing is weakening the effectiveness of the antibiotic in you so that next time, when you really need it, it might just not work all that well.
and if you're taking a massive drug like levaquin that has the potential to cripple you for life, is any sinus infection really worth taking the chance?
