Hi everyone ~ I am so glad I have found all of you. I have an appt today to have the Mirena placed. I highly considering canceling the appt now. I have read probably 98% bad and only 2% good. can anyone help me decide what I should do? I was having it placed for my heavy, painful menses, the birth control is/was a bonus feature. really? I shouldn't do this eh? someone please respond.

Hi Tonya1111, I'm currently a Mirena user and I'm going to the doctor today to have it removed! I got it inserted in July and started off having the minor side effects like pelvic pain and spotty periods. Recently, I have been experiencing some yellow discharge, cramping in my right leg, severe headaches, mood swings, acne and hair loss. The cramping is so bad that I can barely stand up. If I could go back and opt not to get Mirena I would. I thought this would be a great experience for me but know i'm worried that I might have an infection. I'm also going through hell trying to get it removed! I have been to the emergency room twice, only to have the hospital send me home with some Tylenol 3 for the pain. I have taken urine, blood and paps smears only to be told there's nothing wrong with me and I must get the damn thing removed by my doctor! Today I'm making a surprise visit to her office and demand that I get some results. If she can't help me, I will have to ask for my medical records and find a new gynecologist.

Hi, i just had mine placed last week, on the second day of my menstrual cycle. So far I think that my mind plays more tricks on me after getting it placed, because I feel akward. The cramping went away immediately. The bleeding was less. I had sex with my husband and since then I have been spotting. All of which I think is managable and well worth having it because I have three children and this is no where near the pain of childbirth or the cost of another child. Hope this helps.
-25 yr. old Married mother of three.

Hi tonya1111, despite all the bad press this coil has had, I'd say it's still worth trying it out as every woman is different, some respond better to it than others. If you have a condition such as heavy painful periods then it's a good thing as it does minimise blood loss each month and also protects ladies from cervical cancer, but there are issues with it, such as infections and pain. It supposedly takes 3 months for it to calm down and the spotting to stop, but everybody is different. I'm waiting to see if my side effects calm down and giving it a chance as my doctor strongly recommends it, I hope this helps in your decision. All the best, keep us posted!!

I had tried it for heavy, erratic bleeding and after a couple weeks of spotting, the mirena solved the problem. I didn't have any problems with it. Everyone is different.

i triedd everything for insanely heavy periods that were out of control. This mirena worked really well for me. I have a top notch ob in ny, putting it in was very painful at all.no cramping, no bleeding..I barely have a period and no longer anemic- i had to get iron injected into my veins as i was s anemic from so much blood loss.So for me this has saved me.HOWEVER, i have gained 7-8 pounds and at 103 to 110 i have gained 2 sizes.thats a lot of weight as i have been pretty constant my whole life. Now 5 months into it i do have joint pain both hips that seemed to develop overnight..It is painful and i will get a series of test to rule out arthritis. I am 51 and have no history of it in the family esp at this age so pretty sure mirena has caused this and 100% sure weight gain.but i have to stay on for now to keep bleeding at bay.No problem with headaches, acne-maybe a little more moody. have always tolerated bcpillls through college with 4-5 pounds of weight gain.this is twice as much and i am exercising more and eating right. Will have to see about pain in hips and bloated belly- i always had a really flat stomach..but for now have to stay put.overall happier with than without but am very concerned about hip pain.good luck:-) there are people who are happy with this.one of my closest friends is on her 2nd 5 years later and she is thin and with no problems..
