I'm a 20 year old female. I'm in my second year of college. I was diagnosed with Bipolar II when I was 18 and a senior in high school. I was raised to 100mg of Lamictal at that point. I became so much better in a matter of months. I wasn't crying over everything, every time I messed up, it didn't feel like I hit rock bottom. I was able to feel real emotions after all of the medications they had put me on and taken me off of so fast in my two visits to an impatient stress unit. Somewhat recently, I've noticed that I can't think. Sometimes it's racing thoughts. Sometimes it's because I draw a blank. More and more it feels like I'm constantly drawing a blank. I can't find words, I use the wrong words, it takes me a little bit to comprehend. Half of the time words don't look right to me, whether they're spelled right or not. A few weeks ago I was driving and suddenly felt like I knew absolutely nothing. It was the weirdest thing I had ever experienced. It only lasted a brief moment, and I was fine again. I brought it up to my psychiatrist and she seemed to have no idea what I was talking about. I can't focus, I can't think. I'm scared that one day I'm just going to wake up and have no idea what's going on. If anybody has gotten off of this medicine, does this get better once you're off of it? Or is it permanent? My hair is falling out. My hair has always fallen out, but now it's falling out in larger amounts. I have very thick, very curly hair. I haven't lost any of the curl and it's still thick, but with the amounts of my hair that I see everywhere, I am unsure how I still have any. I used to pin it down as stress. Stress never caused this much of my hair to fall out, though. I think Lamictal actually helped my headaches, though. Thankfully. I was diagnosed with chronic migraines a few years back. I get maybe one a month now, down from the weekly ones I was getting. The last time I was at the psychiatrist (about two weeks ago), she pushed my Lamictal up to 150mg. I haven't taken the 150mg yet, for fear of what will happen. I finished off the 100mg last night and need to get it refilled today. I still have a prescription for the 100mg and am debating on whether or not to refill that. Since she put my Klonopin back up from 0.25mg to 0.5mg, I feel much, much better. I don't want to be on medicine forever, but I honestly feel like I'm not going to get a choice, here. I am, however, glad I've found so many people with the same symptoms as me. Why are these showing up after two years of taking it? Why didn't they show up sooner?

hello. I'm a twenty five year old male with bipolar disorder. I take 300 mg of Lamictal. I also am taking .5 mg of Klonopin so I found your post interesting. I would just say that I have not personally had any of the memory problems you are describing. I have taken several things that did effect me in that way but I have had better luck with Lamictal. It is no wonder drug but I would hesitate getting off of it. The cold hard fact is everything out there for people like us have side effects. Lamictal just seems to have fewer or at least they do not seem as bad. Good luck

Hello there!

I find it very interesting that you said that you had side effects show up after 2 years of being on the medication...because after I had been on lamictal for 2 years I suddenly started having some neurological issues as well. For instance I was diagnosed with adult onset ADD...which some doctors do not believe happens...

But anyway...I don't know why this has occurred for both of us...maybe there is some damage with long term usage of this drug?? Who knows...

I have been on 100mg of lamictal for two years and have had those moments of forgetfulness but what I am really replying about is the hair loss. You should have your doctor check your b12 levels. I get a shot once a month and it almost completely stopped my hair loss and gave me more energy.

@happykcat I have to ask my doctor to get my blood levels checked. If I don't, I'm lucky to get them checked once or twice a year. She doesn't think anything will happen, I guess. When I do ask she makes me feel like an idiot because she's the doctor. The last time I got my blood done, the results came back and she basically had an, "I told you so." attitude about it. I'm thinking of going to my family doctor to get my blood levels checked. Since I'm on Klonopin and Lamictal, I feel like I should be getting my blood checked more than that. But who knows.

I might look into getting that checked, though. It will definitely be worth it if that's what it is. I'm constantly tired. I stop breathing in my sleep, which she wants me to be tested for sleep apnea. Other than that, even the nights I don't stop breathing in my sleep, I wake up so tired. I have to nap. I have no energy and I'm just constantly run down. Unfortunately, my hair has not stopped falling out. But thank you, I will definitely look into that.

I had the hair loss problem (this had never been an issue before for me) on certain generic lamotrigine brands as well, leading me to believe it's something in the inactive ingredients. Anyway, I changed to the Teva generic and my hair went back to normal and my face stopped breaking out.

@rhcpaji What is Teva generic? And I've noticed my face breaking out, too. I don't understand it at all. It'll be three years this year that I've been on it. I didn't have any side effects up until recently. I have an appointment with the psychiatrist on Wednesday. I'm about fed up with it and I think I'm going to ask her to switch me to something else.

I was recently at the eye doctor and they said my eye problems are probably because of this medicine. I had pretty good vision up until now.
