Gabapentin a Lifesaver or Nightmare?

My doc just prescribed me Gabapentin 100 mg. use for nerve pain. I have 5 bulging disks. I am on no pain meds at all not even otc. The only med I take is Lorazepam 1mg. 1/2 tablet a day or a whole when I need it. I am very leary of taking this since discovering it is a sister to Neurontin. My mother takes Neurontin and I do not want the side effects she has. Very scary. I'm debating to take the Gabapentin or not. It's been 6 days since I've had this medicine filled and I've not taken the first one. Will someone help me out here giving personal experience with this med should I take it? I've lived with the nerve pain for over a year and 1/2.
