Lantus Byetta, Bloating, Metformin, Family Doctor, Doctor Who

My doctor added Lantus to my medicine regimen including Byetta 10, Metformin 1500 twice a day. On the Byetta I lost 35-40 lbs very easily. The moment I added the Lantus I was bloated and over a 2 months I had gained back all the weight I had just lost. When I asked my Doctor about the bloating and weight gain she said she didn't think it had anything to do with the Lantus. But I was losing weight until she added the Lantus! I don't think that's just a coincidence. What should I do? Should I go to a doctor who specializes in diabetes instead of my family doctor who I love dearly?
Davidirish - all insulins can cause weight gain. this is a well known side effect, you might want to consider going to a endo. spec. how high is your a1c?
Elaine45 - Hi, I don't think you are exagerating. I am on 30 units of lantus in the evening. I am also on 10mcg. of Byetta, twice a day. I went on both at the same time. My BG went down, but I have gained 9 pounds, and am miserable. My stomach is so bloated, I feel pregnant. At this point, I might consider going off the insulin. I talked to the doctor this last time and told him I was feeling bloated. My BG was higher, and he told me to add 6 more units of insulin. Hard to believe, isn't it? Good luck to you. Hope you get things straight and feel better. Sorry about the weight gain. But, insulin will do it. Before this last time on insulin, I gained 28 pounds. I quit the insulin, and lost the 28 pounds. Then I was put on it again, and here I am, on my way back up. And miserable.

Sunchild - Yeah, I thought that I was just fat because I was pregnant for five years. They put me on Lantus while I was pregnant w/ my 1st. After I had her I tryed losing the weight. I've gained 30lbs since last summer. I have starved myself and even got on antidepressants(sad because fat) only to get fatter. I went to an Endocrinologist yesterday, and he told me that the Lantus was making me gain weight. He told me as soon as I get on the pump, I'll lose all the weight! I have seen a # of doctors over the years and they all asked me why i keep gaining weight, like I was pigging out on cheese curls or something. I'm so mad!
Mimiche - Dioabetes have something called "Dawn Phenomenom" meaning that at night your blood sugar drops down to a very low level , could be 30 and it wakes you up, but you are tired and dont realize that your blood sugar is hitting bottom, so your body immediately signals your sugar to rise but it rises up to a very high level ( this is a way for your body to keep you alive) like 200 by early morning. So what happens is you think that you are not getting enough insulin and your doctor puts you on higher doses and it become a viscious cycle. Now when you have a low blood sugar level like 40 or 50 during the day your body will not react the same way, your blood sugar level will not go back up like when you are asleep, you must take orange juice or sugar or whatever to bring back your level. So some doctors tend to increase your insulin dosage like Lantus because you have high blood sugar in the morning except that they dont think about "Dawn Phenomenom" affecting you from actually geting too much insulin. Please Google "dawn Phenomenom" and learn about it to help save yourself. diabetics must take control of their life while being treated by doctors. There is so much to learn about this disease. trust me, I am always learning about this disease that I have called diabetese but I am doing well. I am on Byetta now twice a day, Lantus 8 units once in the morning, I exercise in the early evening or I stay very physically active during the day. I was getting a ot of "Dawn Phenomenom" when I was on Humalog, I was taking too much to enjoy a full meal putting on weight. I was wearing a size 8-10, now I am down to a size 4, lost 22 pounds on Byetta, my blood sugar level is more often around 90-102 in the morning. If I wake up at 3 AM, I test my blood sugar, if it is like 80, I will drink at least 2 ounces of orange juice followed by water just to make sure it does not keep going too low and back up "Dawn Phenomenom". Keep on learning about how to take care of your diabetese and take care of yourself.
