Lisinopril and Hearing Loss
Posted over a year ago
How many out there have experienced a sudden hearing loss, temporary or permanent while on lisinporil? Min started within four days and I do not know if they can reverse it. Please, I would like to hear from others.

Novaleesa - Hi there. I have not experienced hearing loss that I know of.. although it does seem that my hearing is much worse than I thought it should be. What I *have* noticed is constant ringing in my ears. I used to get that once in awhile from listening to the radio too loud or having a bunch of kids roaring around the house, but not like this. It's constant. Sometimes I can even tune it out, but not often. Unfortunately, I am not aware if it is the Lisinopril causing this problem or not. But, what I can say, is that the ringing didn't start until after I started taking it. Hrmmmm.
Minerva - Lisinopril for treating high blood pressure is a potassium depleting medication. This is ironic because high blood pressure is often caused by low potassium levels. Most of us have very low levels of potassium already due to Western diets high in salt and low in potassium. You get potassium from vegs and fruits.
So, it is not Lisinopril to blame. It is poor dietary habits that need fixing. Potassium deficiency can lead to hearing loss and tinnitus (ringing in the ears). Fix the potassium levels and this will be reversed. Potassium loss also leads to stroke, kidney stones and osteoporosis.
Crittersall - My problem has been hearing waning and waxing in my left ear. I'm 89 and started lisinopril 20 mgs on 4/1/11. Hearing fades away in my left ear. I had both hearing aisds checked which were negative re malfunctioning and so I sought the help of the internet and found that hearing loss occurs more often than had been thought. Because of other unpleasant side effects I am now on a reduced dose (10mg) which i started yesterday. Too early to see any change but I am, also, starting to include more potassium in my diet (food). I am bookmarking this site so that I may follow up this note with a progress note sometime down the line.

Rwaldrip - I have been taking lisinopril for several years. I now have complete hearing loss in my left ear along with tinnitis. I have slight tinnitis in my right ear. My ENT has no idea why I have lost my hearing, but I suspect the lisinopril.
