I am currently 19 years old and had Mirena placed about a month ago. Being born with a heart condition (Co-Arctation of the main aorta) left me with little choices when it came to birth control. I do no plan on lying I have been sexually active since I was 16, like most teenagers (scary I know). However, after my first year of college I realized that pregnancy is not something to take lightly so I explored my options and found "Mirena".
Now when I first had Mirena inserted I had know idea what I was getting myself into. Unfortunately for me due to never having a child the pain was out of this world. I nearly fainted due to insertion, and I have always considered myself, one with a very high pain tolerance. There was also a ton of blood and lots of cramping during the insertion. Yet once all was said and done I thought I was fine. However, it was only just the beginning of a terrible nightmare.
For days upon days after the insertion I had the worst cramps ever! It was absolutely awful. I could not stand up straight, walk correctly, or even find the energy to do anything productive. The pain was comparable to have contractions. I took so many pain killers that when I told the doctor about it just a week after insertion they had a liver test run to reassure that I had not permanently damaged my liver. The doctor then ran some very uncomfortable test, that involved me taking my pants of several times in front of several doctors and allowing them all to get a feel for what was going on inside my vagina. Needless to say at 19, this was the place I wanted some 55 year old mans hands.
I was then admitted some pills that deal with only cramps and sent along my way with a 1,000 medical bill. (As if the 800 dollars spent for Mirena was not enough). The pills did help and the cramping went away within a week and half. However, then I started my period, and it lasted for 3 weeks. I am currently a month later with Mirena and still spotting heavy brown blood.
Although, the absolute worst part about this damn Mirena is the fact that I have not had sex since insertion, I have acne for the first time in 19 years, and I am gaining weight like a pregnant women. Also with all these side effects you bet your attitude is not at is best. So my advice for all of those who read this. Please get all the itty bitty details from your doctor. Mirena has been the biggest regret I have had. I plan on getting it removed asap and getting on the pill like everyone else. I also highly recommend not getting it if you are around my age and have never had kids. Plain and simple Mirena is Bad News Bears...
