Swollen Legs and Feet.
Posted over a year ago
I've been on Norvasc for about 8 years and have had swollen legs and feet all this time. In the morning when I get out of bed, they're fine, but shortly after being up on them, they start to swell really badl. even had to buy new shoes, because my feet wouldn't go into the old ones.
Jonsimon - Swelling of the feet and lower legs is a well-known side effect of the calcium channel blockers like Norvasc (amlodipine). In most people it is not very severe but in some it can be severe enough to force them to find an alternative.
Were you put on Norvasc to treat high blood pressure or angina (chest pain with exercise) ? What dose do you take ?
More difficult if you started it to control angina but if you started taking it to reduce high blood pressure, there are a number of alternatives that could be used which would not cause your feet to swell - my first choice would be Lisinopril or Enalapril. If you don't get sufficient control with either of those on their own, they can be combined with hydrochlorothiazide, Indapamide or Chlorthalidone for a stronger effect.
I think that you need to talk seriously to your doctor about the alternatives that are available to you so that you can avoid this annoying side effect
Good luck
