Adderall with Yaz anyone?

Posted at 8:26 PM on Feb 07, 2008 by tuke, #4747
My 13-year-old is having some depressed behavior, and I'm not sure if I should blame the Adderall she's been taking for 2 years or the Yaz for 3 months. I think Yaz, but it's complicated. Her doctor isn't helpful, has only positive things to say about both, "give it more time", etc. She is just not a happy girl anymore. She's only taking 10mg of Adderall, so I'm' thinking of taking her off. I'm also concerned that if I do take her off, she'll eat the world. She does that when she forgets the pill (wrappers all over the house is my first clue). The Yaz seems to have increased her appetite. I'm obviously confused, and can't find anyone else who is taking both. Any help appreciated.

Maybe normal teenage stuff? Why is she so young and on Yaz though? I would probably blame the birth control, although that is the age when hormones start changing. Birth control has been linked to depression in some cases. Is your daughter possibly using other substances? That might sound shocking, but kids are doing things younger and younger these days, so it wouldn't hurt to find out. If it's new behavior, it's most likely the birth control, and there are plenty of other ones out there she can try. Again, at such a young age, does she really need it? Something to think about with your doctor, or get a second opinion. Good luck! PS-Adderall and other stimulants sometimes keep depression at bay so don't take her off of it without talking to a psychiatrist!

She was just put on Yaz because of painful periods and ironically, moodiness related to periods. We had a discussion last night, and she feels depressed, "lazy", and almost ready to cry most of the time. She doesn't feel like brushing her teeth or showering, she says. I'm pretty sure I'm going to take her off the Yaz. The Adderall is at least providing some benefits. I'm quite sure there are no other substances because this downer mood stuff has pretty much killed her social life. We don't need birth control at this time, we were just hoping to find help with her painful periods. I went through that at her age, and it sucked. I was hoping medicine had come far enough since then that she could take something without side effects. There's no magic, though. Thanks for the reply!!
