Any body switch from Depo to Mirena?

Posted at 4:32 PM on Oct 31, 2007 by missmaine, #3730
Would love to hear your story if you have! I am having a hard time finding others who have gone straight from depo to mirena. I was on depo for almost 5 years and didn't get a period all that time so my body was already a little wacked. Its hard to tell what symptoms could be the going off depo, mirena, or just plain hormonal changes since I'm nearing 30! Anybody have insight or thoughts???

I was on depo and had to stop taking it due to the side effect my body eperienced after a shot. Instead of waiting any time I went the next month after my next injection was due and had the Mirena inserted on Feb 5, 2008(had to wait the month for insurance purposes to find out what they would cover) so far I all I have experienced is constant cramping and an increase in appetite. So otherwise it has gone ok

I was due for a depo shot in December 2007, and talked to my doc about switching because of some moderate weight gain and some mild acne. (I had just lost over 30 pounds and had been down to 145# for over 8 months, which for me meant I was finally back into my size 6 clothes!) So he told me that it was basically the same hormone, but in such a smaller amount and that my side effects from the depo should definietly improve with Mirena. At that very same visit I got the Mirena inserted and switched! By early May I was up to 175 pounds, had to begin seeing a dermatologist for horrible cystic acne which has been unrelieved with two rounds of different medications, I'm being treated with pain killers and anti-inflammatory's for my severe joint pain, I look 6 months pregnant, severe mood swings and depression, leg swelling...you name it! I found this website and realize many women experience the same thing as me, and it's due to this IUD! Studies done in the UK show that the hormone goes systemic and is equivalant to taking 2 "mini-pills" per day on a regular basis! High incidence of breast cancer, and premature menopause as well. I had mine removed 2 weeks ago now and am waiting to feel better still. That was truly the most horrible thing I have ever done to myself. Good luck to you whatever you choose...but truly educate yourself on the side effects. Some women have great results, but many women have been suffering with things they never thought could even be caused by this little IUD!
