Fearful to Sleep/Emotional Outbursts...Singulair to blame?

Posted at 8:46 PM on Aug 23, 2008 by danap, #7257
I have been reading all of these posts and have another question. I hope that someone can help. My daughter, 8 years old, has been on Singulair since she was 4. She is normally a very happy girl with a wonderful disposition. For the last year or so, she has been having trouble getting herself to sleep at night. She says that she hears things in her head such as ringing or "noises". A few hours before she knows it's bedtime, she cries and when we ask her why she's crying, she can't give us a reason. We initially thought that she was crying for no reason because she didn't want to go to sleep. I remember reading about the side effects of Singulair causing mood swings, etc., but her's are not violent mood swings. Just very emotional and has a hard time coming down from the "episode". I'm at a loss...I have not talked to her doctor yet about it, but have told her that we will make an appointment this week to discuss it with him. My husband suggested that maybe it sounded like she was having a panic attack or anxiety attack. I hate to label her as that at such a young age. My mind now goes back to the side effects of Singulair and maybe this is to blame. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! Concerned Mom

My son developed an anxiety disorder when he was 5 and I know that Singulair was the culprit. He had been on it without any noticeable side effects for a few years (but looking back there were problems sleeping and other issues we chalked up to being a three- or four-year-old..) But when he started Kindergarten (also, his dose increased and he started up after a short break in the summer) he developed severe anxiety, especially in social situations. He also became very withdrawn and started to talk about death. We spent a year and a half trying to figure out what the problem was - guess what - it was the Singulair. He has been off now since January 2007 and he is like a different person. His mood is so much lighter, he laughs and plays like he used to. There is no question in my mind that Singulair can cause this insidious anxiety (often accompanied by depression and low self image, which in turn can and has led to suicide) in certain people. The worst part is that the nature of the problem makes it hard to figure out - who would suspect asthma medication? Plus, the medical community is still in denial that this drug is dangerous for some people. Please trust your instincts and stop the Singulair. There are other solutions for asthma. My son is doing SO well now. - Jan P.S. Have you looked at the stories at www.medicaitons.com/se/singulair ?- there are plenty of other people who have experienced these symptoms
