Feeling horrible.

Posted at 10:35 PM on Aug 26, 2009 by whiskers, #10751
I've been taking Prednisone on and off for a year but the past 2 - 3 months been on a fixed dose by my consultant for my asthma. I feel horrible, I cry for no reason, I can't sleep, am lucky if I go to bed by 5 am and then take a further hour to sleep, my moods are terrible, my joints ache, drinking like a fish, constantly needing the loo. Is this normal?

Also meant to add I'm 19, I don't know anyone else on this drug. Some nights I feel amost psychotic, my head is screaming "get me off this drug", its scaring me a little. Anybody who can shed light or offer some advice would be appreciated.

Prednisone is steroid and a "not uncommon" side effect of steroids is "steroid psychosis" something the women in my family seem to have a genetic pre-disposition for. Other family members are bipolar, so I'm guessing that the "manic" reaction to prednisone comes from the same area of the brain. Whether you should be scared I don't know, but your reaction is much more common than you may have realized.
