hairloss and prednisone

Posted at 12:58 AM on Sep 11, 2009 by momoks, #10869
I am on prednisone for at least one year for the disease Temporal Arteritis, and I am quickly losing my hair (along with all the other typical side effects). Does the hair loss increase as the drug is reduced? And does any or most of the hair grow back after the drug is stopped?

please take care of yourself. my mother also had this disease and was on prednisone for ages. she had incredible bone pain and suffered three compression fractures to her spine. she collapsed from 5'5" to 4'11", this was years ago and no one told her about the risk of osteoporosis and what to do to hopefully avoid it. so your hair might be the least of it!

oops! i almost forgot- i've just been on prednisone for about 4 months for nephrotic syndrome. needless to say, i was freaked out since i saw what it did to my mom and i have no intention of living out my life in a diminished state! i took massive amounts of omega 3 fish oil, lots of vitamin C, calcium & vitamin D3. i took a special licorice supplement instead of prilosec to protect my stomach lining and i used natural progesterone cream to protect my bones instead of fosomax. i took yoga and pilates classes and walked to work everyday (1/2 hr). i got some sunshine everyday as well. i had pretty much no side effects- my friends said i talked faster than usual but that was all- until i was tapering off. then i experienced some hip pain and a slightly puffy face and a little downy hair (pale, thank god) on my face. now that i am completely off, i notice that my hair is falling out more and my asthma, which i had under control with no medication, has come back in full force! i read that other "old" conditions can be re-activated when you come down off prednisone. obviously, my adrenal glands shut down during treatment and they haven't come back all the way yet. so i'm taking dessicated adrenals and a bunch of supplements and i notice an improvement already. the omega 3 fish oil is anti-inflammatory. if you take a lot (i took 10 teaspoons a day) and stick to an anti-inflammatory diet, you should need less prednisone. with my mom, every time they took her SED rate and the numbers weren't good, they'd up her prednisone and extend the length of her treatment. i wish i had known then what i know now. because of the supplements i took and my good organic, mostly vegetarian diet, i recovered much faster than my doctor expected and took much less prednisone than the standard protocol good luck
