Just tried 2 days[only two!!!] of Lovastatin 20 mg and could not sleep and was very depressed. I was one of the 1% of the population who have this side effect and was initially told by poison control that insomnia was not a side effect but I searched myself and discovered it was. Has anyone had this side effect with Lipitor because now my dr. wants me to try Lipitor 10mg? I've tried Red Yeast rice, Niacin and have taken Fish oil for yrs and still have levels of 306 but after reading these posts, I'm scared to try Lipitor. My mother had similar levels, lived to 85 with no heart problems. We have no heart disease in my family. My sister is a work-out freak and has levels higher than mine. I 'm thinking I'd just rather have high cholesterol!

Lipitor is a dangerous drug and can cause MANY side effects. The drs. and the drug co's have a HUGE racket on cholesterol. . . . . big $ and big side effects. The red yeast rice is about the same of statins, so, don't take it. Your body/mind needs cholesterol. The fish oil is an excellent choice. There are many natural products and alternatives on health issues.
Insomnia as well as depression are known side effects of all statins.
Be glad that you got a quick reaction so there“s time to find out more about this type of medications and the whole cholesterol issue.
When it comes to side effects - remember that there is very poor reporting and therefore side effects are more common than is noted.
There are also side effects which are not known when a new medication is released. It can take many years.
Rember Vioxx, the new anti-inflammatory drug withdrawn from the whole world in 2004 because of serious side effects to the heart!
