parents of children taking singulair

After reading all of this horrifying info on singulair, i'm taking my 21 month old son off of it. unfortunately, i think it was helping his asthma....at least the wheezing is not as bad as it was months ago. He still has a chronic cough/choking spells that are worse at night and during his mid-day nap. He is also on flovent nightly. albuterol as needed for bad coughing spells. If it helps anybody..we just took him to see a pediatric pulmonologist today...he thinks he's having bad acid reflux causing him to aspirate(he currently has pneumonia), hence the coughingand/or choking during the night. He also says the acid reflux is triggering his asthma. I hope we are successful with the new prevacid treatment for the acid reflux to get this thing under control!

I would consult your doctor before taking him off of singulair. I have been on singulair for 8 years and I haven't had an attack in several years. Singulair has helped me. I think some of those people who have 5 year olds are just going into that hard to handle age. I know my daughter is having a terrible time with her 5 year old with back talk and tantrums and she isn't on singulair.

It is MUCH more than just "normal" 5-year-old behavior. Why don't you read the hundreds of posts from parents citing the same symptoms/behaviors. This medicine is dangerous for children and causes long-lasting problems!

I agree it is not normal for a child to be a picture perfect child (well as best they can be for 5) to go to a devil possesed child in such a short time as my son did. THis drug is has very serious consequences!! It is a shame people blame it on other factors. My son had no life changes, no history, on no other meds. It was like a light switch. I didn't even know my own child. THAT IS A PROBLEM!!! However it did help his asthma. But not worth the cost!!!

You may find that your child's reflux improves without the singulair. We took both our 6yr old and 3 yr old off Singulair recently and we've also been able to take them off of Prevacid. It seems that the Singulair, which was intended to improve their asthma, was actually making things worse by causing reflux. Of course the relflux induced asthma was nearly impossible to control with Albuterol and other medicines. We spent years giving our children breathing treatments several times a day before learning that Prevacid was all they needed. I am extremely upset to have just learned that we wouldn't have even needed the Prevacid without the Singulair!!

My son has been on Singulair for about 4 years. He is 11 years old. He had minor side effects like headaches to begin with. About 2 months ago he started moving into a depressed state. He withdrew from all the activites he used to love. He stopped eating and began to cry all the time. His whole personality changed. When I talked to him he told me he just felt sad and lonely but didn't really know why. He did not want me or his dad out of his sight. I mentioned this to a friend of mine and told her he was on Singulair. She urged me to take him off because of all the talk about it's side effects. I took him off of the medicine and within 3 days he had gone back to his old happy self, I can't prove it was the Singulair but you can't convinve me that it wasn't. I encourage everyone to see their doctor and take their children off of this medicine. It's not worth taking a chance.

I hope no one tries to confince me that my 2 year olds behavior is normal, because it is not. She was on Singulair for 2 weeks and became a totally different child. Last night she had a complete meltdown for no reason, was completely inconsolable and I could NOT calm her down. I decided right then and there to ditch the Singulair - I would rather have a sick but happy child than a healthy miserable one. In my opinion, the ones who do not have these side effects are extremely lucky. It is pure hell to watch a 2 year old child go from being bubbly, happy and giggly to being whiney, lethargic and totally uninterested in anything. I truely believe Singulair needs to advertise these side effects more so people can make the decision whether it is worth it for them or not, and so that family and friends can watch for signs of depression.

It is scary reading all these post about kids not doing well on Singulair. I have a 5 year old son who has been taking it for about a year now and does fine. He is high- functioning Autistic and was actually recommended that he take Singulair instead of Zyrtec for his allergies. Something in the Singulair actually helps with the Autism and we did see an increase in his vocabulary after a short time on it. It was recommended by his DAN doctor, Defeat Autism Now. I will have to continue to do research because hurting my son in any way is truly not worth it. Good Luck out there.

My 41/2 year old has been on Singulair for over two years to help with allergies and asthma. I dismissed my childs notices from school for being whiny and unconsolable as it being part of her personality. Now this behavior comes more frequently and it makes life for my family intolerable. The new behavior is a fear of being alone and clinging to me (mom) more than ever. I have taken her off the meds and we are going back to the doctors. I was happy because her asthma was under control, but her moods are so unpredictable we need an alternative.

Does anyone have any positive feedback about their child taking Singulair?

please remember that every child is different...what works or effects some children will not work or effect others. Both my kids have breathing issues...my daughter - a strong-willed/defiant personality type could NOT use Albuterol because it would cause the anger, "devil" personality folks speak of in this thread...so she had to use Xopenex...however...my son - a more mild-mannered and "compliant" personality type had no issues with Albuterol and is now on Singulair with no side effects. If your child does well on it...don't panic...if ur child does not...there are other options. You are all right to do your research, as knowledge is power...but make sure you talk to your doctor's and take your individual kids temperaments and situations in to account!
