pregnant and on tegretol!!!

I have just found out that i am one month pregnant, ive seen my nuerologist and he has told me to stay on the drug. This bothers me just because i have read and been told what can happen to my unborn child, although i was revised that the newer drugs have been better, but i was to stay on tegretol. Ive been on it now for 7 yrs., no serious side effects, but i seriously think that there should be a different and safer drug to take while being pregnant. None the less, i feel that some of the doctors are blowing smoke up my rear bc i was also told that after 6 weeks when the organs r developed that the tegretol doesnt effect the baby, which in my eyes is a big lie, just because of the fact that if it can harm the unborn child, why wouldnt it hurt the baby during the whole 9 months? It just doesnt make ne sense to me what so ever, if nebody can help me in this matter it will be greatly appreciated!!!!! Thank you, Melody
